Chapter 96 A Stranger’s Kindness

If she could live, she wanted to have this baby.

“Oh dear, you’re an orphan? Do you have anywhere to go?”

Tatiana gave her a grateful smile, but the expression pulled at the wounds on her face. She winced in pain, tears welling in her eyes.

“You mustn’t get that wound wet. Just focus on resting and healing.”

Tatiana later learned the old woman’s name was Jaime. She was seventy years old and a scavenger. Having lost her husband early in life and her son later on, she lived alone, surviving by collecting scraps.

Jaime was poor, but she was incredibly kind to Tatiana, giving her almost everything she had.

Expired milk, stale bread, and a small, broken piece of chocolate–these were all things Jaime couldn’t bear to eat herself. She had saved them, and in saving them, they had all gone past their time.

Tatiana held the bread and milk, looking up at Jaime’s benevolent smile, and a tear suddenly fell.

After everything she had been through, she had so rarely encountered kindness that she was at a loss for how to react.

“Silly child, what are you crying for? Is the food no good? Just wait. After I sell these scraps, I’ll have money. I’ll buy you a chicken to help you get your strength back.”

She frantically shook her head. “No, no, please don’t trouble yourself, Grandma. This is more than enough.”

Afraid Jaime would be suspicious, she immediately began to eat. She swallowed the food along with her tears.

She stayed, keeping Jaime company. While her face healed, she helped sort the scraps.

The wound couldn’t get wet. It was smeared with a cheap, greasy green ointment that looked sickening.

Jaime wouldn’t let her go out, afraid she would be bullied. She insisted Tatiana stay inside and rest. She didn’t step outside the concrete room until the wounds had stopped oozing and begun to scab over.

She now had only three days left of the ten Baron had given her. She had to do something.

Meanwhile, at the Jackson family’s old residence.

Jasper and Bianca had returned to the estate, as the patriarch was coming home from the hospital today. Everyone was hiding the news about Tatiana from the ol.

The old patriarch couldn’t stand the sight of this new granddaughter–in–law. He wouldn’t spare her so much as a glance, but he observed the minimum etiquette, having the butler present her with a stack of money.

But it was only money. He didn’t take a single sip of the tea Bianca served him. The message was clear.

Bianca’s expression froze. Inwardly, she cursed the old fossil a thousand times over.

Jasper didn’t try to force his grandfather to accept Bianca. He simply guided her away from the old man.

Bianca was furious. She couldn’t stop a hurt expression from showing. “Jasper, does your grandfather… not like me?”

“He doesn’t like you. Don’t press the issue.”

Bianca’s face nearly contorted.

“Jasper, come to the study with me.”

Barry summoned his son to the study, leaving Bianca alone with Marilyn. Bianca put on a smile and moved closer. “Mother, let me keep you company.”

Marilyn’s expression was indifferent. “My throat is bothering me. We can talk another time.”

She was shut down with a single sentence.

Bianca suddenly realized this was nothing like the life she had imagined after marrying into a wealthy family. It wasn’t just the old patriarch; even the servants here looked at her with unfriendly eyes.

Her feeling was correct. The servants in the old residence were all long–timers who had worked there for half their lives. They had practically watched Tatiana grow up.
