Chapter 4
I couldn’t shake the question that gnawed at me relentlessly: Did Julian ever truly love me?
“Babe?” His voice finally broke through the heavy silence, a hint of concern threading through the word.
Julian had noticed something was wrong—finally.
“What’s going on?” he asked gently.
Hearing him speak felt like a knife twisting deep inside my chest, squeezing the air from my lungs. I swallowed the ache and forced the words out, fragile but determined.
“Julian.” I summoned every bit of courage I had left.
“Julian, do you love me?”
“Julian, would you ever cheat on me?”
I remembered the day he proposed, down on one knee in front of all our friends. When I whispered yes, tears streamed down his face. He clung to me tightly, his voice trembling as he promised,
“Aurora, I swear I’ll never let you down.”
“Aurora, I love you. I will never become like my mother. I won’t betray you. I’m yours. Forever.”
And I believed him. Wholeheartedly.
I trusted that Julian was the center of my world. That no matter the storms, we’d weather everything side by side, until the very end.
But now?
I watched Lilac’s hands roam over him like they belonged there. Saw her teeth sink into his neck while he hesitated, caught between desire and doubt. He let out a low groan, breath ragged, and finally spoke to me.
“Aurora.”
“Don’t overthink it.”
“I’ll be home tomorrow.”
He gripped Lilac’s waist as she pressed herself closer, his voice thick with tension.
“Aurora, I have to go. I’ll call you later.”
He didn’t wait for a reply.
