Chapter 6
“Aurora!”
“Where do you think you’re going?” Julian’s voice was sharp, filled with frustration and desperation.
Julian and I had been through countless fights before. We argued fiercely, gave each other the cold shoulder for days, and even talked about ending things between us. But this time felt different.
The first time we nearly broke up was when his career was just starting to soar. There was this young intern fresh out of college who had her sights set on him. She wouldn’t leave him alone, even boldly claiming she didn’t mind being the other woman.
She confronted me directly one afternoon, her eyes bright with conviction.
“Love doesn’t care who came first,” she said, her tone almost innocent. “There’s no such thing as a homewrecker—only people who don’t try hard enough or don’t appreciate what they have.”
I remember looking at her, seeing the naïveté in her face, and then turning to Julian, forcing him to make a choice.
Without hesitation, he chose me.
But behind my back, he still found a way to get her a job at one of his partner companies. When I discovered this betrayal, it broke something between us. That was the moment we truly split.
For two long months, I refused to reach out. I cut off all contact, unwilling to hear his voice or see his face.
Then one cold, snowy night, Julian called me, his voice cracking with tears. He admitted he’d made a terrible mistake. Even when our friends told me I was being unforgiving, I couldn’t bring myself to believe that our love was truly broken. I wasn’t ready to forgive him.
But he was relentless. He knelt outside my parents’ house, the snow swirling around him, refusing to leave until I came outside.
That’s when Lilac, who had always despised Julian, surprised me.
“You’ve made your point,” she said quietly.
“If I were you, and some guy did all this for me? I’d run straight into his arms.”
At that moment, I thought Lilac didn’t want me to lose Julian. Maybe, deep down, she had feelings for him all along. Maybe I was just blind to it.
