The servant followed close behind me, answering with a cautious tone, “The meal’s ready. Hearing you’d be home today, we fixed it all according to your taste.
That was when it hit me-the house was eerily quiet. “Where’s Nathan?” I asked. That energetic little rascal usually came bounding at me like a puppy.
“Oh, Ms. Cooper picked him up,” the servant spoke up. Her words caught me off guard, but then I recalled that this morning, Nathan had been bugging me nonstop to see Aaliyah. I’d finally caved and given the okay. Aaliyah was still giving me the cold shoulder and didn’t even drop me a line about taking the boy. Whatever, I didn’t have the bandwidth to worry about her right now.
On the dining table was a spread of my all-time favorite dishes. The venison soup, in particular, was wafting this mouth-watering, familiar scent.
I took a sip of the soup the servant ladled for me. It wasn’t half-bad, but the hock was a bit undercooked, and the soup didn’t have that rich, gelatinous quality it should. I wrinkled my nose. “This soup doesn’t taste like it used to,” I remarked.
The servant looked a bit startled for a second, then it clicked. “Oh, Mrs. Richardson was always tinkering with the recipes of your favorite dishes. This soup was really a hassle. She’d head out to a special forest over 20 miles away before dawn just to pick the right venison. She said that only the venison from there was imbued with the most spiritual energy, but it was usually a real challenge to hunt. Well, we really can’t quite replicate her cooking skills.”
My hand with the spoon just hung there in mid-air. I could practically hear Natalie’s sweet, hopeful voice in my ear. “Landon, I gave that venison soup from your favorite private kitchen a go. See how it tastes.”
I’d just assumed she was doing it on a lark. We had servants, right? How much work could it be? So I’d just mumbled, “Yeah, it’s good. Make it more often.”

But she’d lit up like a Christmas tree, never once whining about all the elbow grease put
into it.
A lump formed in my throat, and I couldn’t stomach another bite.
I’d planned to take a trip down memory lane with Natalie, hoping to find a way to win her back. But instead, I’d stumbled onto this harsh, pitiful truth. The so-called “goodness” I thought I’d shown her was just a bunch of empty words and half-hearted gestures. Meanwhile,

what she’d given me were these quiet, steadfast actions, full of meaning, and I’d been blind to it all.
A wave of regret came crashing over me, squeezing my throat so tight I could hardly breathe.
Natalie’s POV:
It was another late night after a grueling day at work. As I finally grabbed my phone, Leonardo’s face seemed to flash right onto the screen, as if summoned by my tired mind.
After that memorable Valentine’s Day, Leonardo became extremely busy. He made an effort, though, calling and texting me regularly. But face-to-face meetings? Those were as rare as a shooting star. It was always something: either he was miles away dealing with some urgent business, or I was knee-deep in the affairs of Moon-Shadowed Pack.
Let’s be real, he had it worse. His schedule was tighter than a drum.
In the brief moments when I wasn’t swamped, my thoughts would drift to him. There were times I’d impulsively dial his number, just craving the sound of his soothing, deep voice. But it was always the same story. After a couple of words, Leonardo would be gone in a flash. The background noise on those calls was a telltale sign of his chaos: sometimes it was a loud, jumbled mess of sounds, other times an eerie, deafening silence.
It was like the man who’d held me so tightly that night was a figment of imagination, fading into a hazy, almost unreal memory.

Thankfully, there was Fiona. Every single day, without fail, she’d send me a sweet message. And now and then, she’d have someone drop off a delicious meal for me. It was that kind of grandmotherly care that thawed the ice around my heart, making me feel like I’d found a real family again.
One evening, a voice message from Fiona popped up on my phone. “Natalie, are you free for dinner at our place tonight? Roger’s slaving away in the kitchen, making all his famous dishes!” Her warm, inviting voice was impossible to resist.
Just picturing the kind faces of Roger and Fiona and the cozy, well-lit living room at their place made my heart melt. My voice softened as I replied, “Sure thing, I’ll be over in a bit.”
An hour later, I was on my way to their place, armed with some high-quality health supplements and fresh fruits, picked with love for the two of them. And, if I was being honest, the thought of maybe running into Leonardo made me change into a cute light-pink dress and put on a bit of makeup.
As soon as I stepped through the door, Fiona was there, all smiles. She took one look at the bags in my hands and gave me a mock scolding. “Honey, we’ve got everything we need here.
