Nathan thought about it for a moment, then looked at Lillian. "Are you sure? We've explored this idea before, but we ultimately decided to focus on autonomous driving and artificial intelligence."
"Of course," Lillian said. "AI is a promising market with plenty of room to grow. But the low-altitude sector is more challenging, has a higher ceiling for growth, and far fewer competitors."
"Li, this field is incredibly resource-intensive," Nathan cautioned. "And it could be years before we see a return on our investment. Are you certain this is the path you want to take?"
Lillian was certain. The Blake family was currently pouring all their resources into artificial intelligence, with the goal of replacing human labor with AI. They had achieved some initial success, but they were now hitting a wall with computational power. The algorithms they had developed in-house were simply not powerful enough. That was why they were so desperate to partner with Litech NaLabs. If they could secure the rights to use the Li Algorithm, the Blake family's business would take a quantum leap forward. Unfortunately for them, Litech NaLabs had shown very little interest in a partnership so far.
"Nathan, I need to work from home for a week," Lillian said.
She wanted to finalize the arrangements for her grandmother as soon as possible, and she was also hoping to bring her mother to live with her. She had more than enough capital to provide the best care for both of them. Now that she was feeling relatively healthy, she also wanted to set up a trust fund for her mother and grandmother, to ensure they would be well taken care of even if, one day, she were to tragically pass away.
Nathan had no problem with her request. "Work from home? So, does that mean you'll be joining the IT department in a week?"
Lillian nodded. "Yes. And could you please make my apologies to my mentor? I know he's planning to stay for a while this time. I'll go see him when I get back to the office."
This put Nathan in a difficult position. "Li, you're his student. He already knows you're back at Litech NaLabs. If you avoid him, he's going to be furious."
"I can't face him looking like this," Lillian said, her voice heavy. "I need to accomplish something first, something to make him feel that having me as a student wasn't a complete disgrace."
The conversation suddenly turned somber. Nathan understood. When she had left the industry for love, their mentor had been devastated, so much so that he had fallen ill from the stress. Now she was back, looking gaunt and weary, the light gone from her eyes. The vibrant, fiery, and radiant woman he remembered was gone, replaced by someone who seemed to carry the weight of the world on her shoulders. It was infuriating to see. If Nathan felt this way, he could only imagine the pain their mentor—a stubborn old man who loved Lillian like his own daughter—would feel. It would be like a knife to the heart. But the old man's temper had only gotten worse with age. It was no wonder Lillian was trying to postpone their reunion.
"It's not a huge problem," Nathan said finally. "At the end of the day, he cares about you. He can wait a few more days. But... what kind of results are you planning to produce?"
Lillian kept it mysterious. "You'll see in a week."
