Chapter 5 Moving Into a Luxury Apartment
After exploring the storage space, Caroline returned to her notebook and started writing down notes.
She had been at it for a long time.
First, she needed to get her body in shape.
Even though Raven was there to protect her, she couldn’t rely on him for everything.

In her previous life, Caroline was pretty good with knives. The alertness she had built up during the apocalypse and the skills she had learned in real fights were all valuable.
But right now, her body was weak. She needed more muscle and to get stronger.
Next, she had to gather supplies: food, snacks, medicine for bad weather, clothes, everyday supplies, and of course, Raven’s dog food, treats, and outfits.
She also made a list of vehicles for emergencies like snowstorms, floods, or earthquakes. That meant having a few RVs, sleds
Raven could pull one, ‘off–road cars, and boats ready.
Tents, camping lights, shovels, solar panels, generators, and water filters. These were all essential, too.
Next, she thought about modifying her house.
Her place was pretty big, around 1,500 square feet. Her parents had left it to her. The location was perfect, right in the city
center.
But the floor was too low.
Acid rain, floods, and even snowstorms could reach buildings up to the 20th floor. To be safe, she needed to live above the 20th floor, preferably on the top floor.
Living on the top floor also meant she could get to the roof quickly if danger came. Extra protection.
While thinking about all this, Caroline remembered something from her previous life.
It was about a month after the apocalypse began. Acid rain kept falling, most streets were flooded, and people had to use boats to move around.
Society had already broken down. Food was running out for most people.
Everyone was trying to find something to eat, not knowing what might happen next.
Caroline and a few friends had formed a small team to search for supplies.
By chance, they ended up at a 12–story apartment building.
The first two floors were flooded, so they went up to the third. They discovered that the lower floors had been a delivery center, and the upper ones were full of companies doing live–stream sales!
The upper floors were packed with all kinds of goods!
But after so much rain, the building was falling apart. The delivery stuff downstairs got ruined by the flood.
Anything that had been soaked in acid rain was useless.
The building was old, the waterproofing was bad, and leaks were everywhere. Tons of supplies on the upper floors yere also destroyed.
Even though everyone left with a bunch of things, they still felt sad about all the stuff that got ruined.
Remembering that, Caroline grabbed her phone, opened the map. She tried to find the building’s name from hemory

After a few failed tries, she finally saw it on the satellite view. It was called “Newcrest Tower.”
“That’s it!”
Caroline jumped up in excitement, dropping the pen in her hand.

Next to her, Raven was chewing a sheep toy plush. He was startled by her sudden movement. He looked up, still holding the toy in his mouth, looking a little silly.
“Raven, let’s go out together!”
Caroline ran over and hugged his neck.
Raven was so shocked by her sudden closeness that he sat up straight, staring at her like she was crazy.
Caroline didn’t care. She grabbed his leash, picked up her car keys, and happily headed straight for Newcrest Tower.
Her plan was to find a tall building near Newcrest Tower and rent it.
Once the apocalypse hit and the floodwaters reached the first floor, she and Raven would sneak in and take all the supplies inside.
After all, leaving them there would just be a waste.
She drove around the neighborhood and soon spotted a tall building she liked.
It had 66 floors, a mixed–use building with both shops and apartments, split into two towers called Tower A and Tower B. The top floor had a big apartment, perfect for Raven.
Caroline wanted the big space so he could move
around comfortably.
When the apocalypse happened, they’d be stuck inside, and he needed room to move around.
She parked the car and called the real estate agent on the rental app, asking if there were any big apartments on the top floor.
The agent sounded excited. “Miss, you’re lucky! We just had a 2,000–square–foot top floor suite available. Are you looking for a long–term or short–term rental?”
Raven looked at Caroline–or maybe just at her phone with his face looking tired, looking unimpressed by the agent’s
enthusiasm.
“I’m downstairs. Let’s meet in person,” Caroline said.
The agent happily gave her the apartment number.
Caroline looked at Raven in the car. She pulled out two pet toys and a water bowl from under the seat and opened the window a little. She said, “Raven, I’m going to check out the apartment. I’ll be back soon. Stay in the car, okay?”
Raven tilted his head, picked up a bunny toy, and lay down in the back seat to chew on it.
Caroline sighed. She still had some work to do to build a stronger bond with Raven. He didn’t seem to rely on her at all.
Part of her secretly wanted him to feel nervous when she left, just so
d act like a clingy little puppy.
Upstairs, the agent was waiting. Seeing Caroline arrive, he quickly showed off the apartment, pointing out the amazing renovations and the spacious layout.
Look at this view! Perfect for watching the street below!” the agent said,
He took Caroline to the living room and pointed at the floor–to–ceiling windows.
Caroline walked over and looked down. She could see the tall building she had been thinking about.
Not only that, but this was the tallest building nearby. From up here, she could see everything going on around her

“I want to rent for five years. I’ll do my own renovations. I’ll pay every three months, leave two months‘ rent as a deposit, and sign a lease. Deal?*
“Five years?”
The agent looked surprised.
Most people didn’t rent these apartments for years, since they were more expensive than other places.
“Yes, I need to renovate. If that’s okay, we can sign the contract today,” Caroline said.
The agent nodded quickly. His face lit up with excitement, and he went to call the landlord.
Since it was peak tourist season in the city, renting for five years at this price was really good.
The landlord made it clear: no tearing down walls that hold up the building, no damaging the main structure, and when Caroline moved out, the apartment had to be restored to its original condition.
Caroline agreed to everything. She even signed a costly “compensation agreement” and paid three months‘ rent in advance.
Three months later, when the apocalypse hit, the landlord probably wouldn’t come back for more rent.
With Caroline’s renovations, this apartment should keep her safe during the first six months of the apocalypse without any problems.
