Caroline glanced over at Raven. He was annoyed by all the noise, but there wasn’t anything she could do about it. She reached out and softly patted his head, trying to calm him down.

At the same time, Caroline picked up a fried chicken drumstick. She peeled off the crispy skin and tore the juicy meat into small pieces, slowly feeding them to him.

“You can’t eat this too much, okay? You still need to eat boiled meat and regular dog food. If you eat too much salt, your fur will start falling out. Then you’ll turn into a bald dog, and no female dogs will want you!”

Raven didn’t even look at her. He just kept chewing. After finishing, he lifted his head, eyes half–closed, staring at her as if saying, “I want more!”

Caroline sighed. Clearly, Raven hadn’t listened to a single word I’d caid.

That night before sleeping, Caroline pulled out the Tivara knife. She practiced some moves she had learned long ago, back before the apocalypse. By the end; her arms and legs hurt badly.

Her body was in such bad shape now.

She told herself that starting tomorrow, she would work out and practice martial arts again. She had to build back the strength she once had before the apocalypse came in her previous life.

Just before going to bed, she got a text from Jonathan. His message was full of sweet words, talking about everything they had shared through the years, and how he was waiting for their engagement.

To keep him from being suspicious, she had taken him off her block list. But reading his words almost made her want to throw up.

“He’s probably doing something disgusting with Reese right now!”

In her previous life, Caroline finally realized she had been tricked.

Reese had been the real mastermind behind Jonathan.

Jonathan wasn’t a good man either, but he was dumb. Most of his schemes had been Reese’s ideas.

That’s why Caroline hated Jonathan, but she hated Reese even more, the fake who played innocent while stabbing her in the

back!

Not wanting to argue, she just texted back, “Got it. We’ll talk another day. I’m tired tonight.”

Jonathan replied with a gentle “Good night.”

Caroline rolled her eyes. What a faker.

At the same time, Jonathan was lying in Reese’s arms. He frowned at Caroline’s cold reply. “Reese, what do you think she means by this? She seems distant to me,”

Reese read the message too, unsure of what it meant.

She told him not to worry, then stood up and called Caroline.

When Caroline saw Reese’s name on her phone screen, a wave of anger rushed through her. Then it felt like someone poured a bucket of cold water on her head.

Ever since her return, she had been busy stocking up supplies and taking care of her dog. As for Reese and Jonathay, this cheating couple, all she felt was pure hatred.

Or maybe, she was still carrying the anger from her previous life.

She wished she could cut those two into pieces.

So, when she first saw the call, her voice showed a little impatience.

But thinking about it now, that wasn’t smart at all.

Taking a deep breath, she sniffled softly, then finally answered Reese’s call.

“Caroline, Jonathan told me you two argued. What happened?”

Reese’s voice on the line sounded full of fake concern.

Inside, Caroline sneered, but she stayed calm and acted like a victim. “Reese, you’re my best friend. You know Jonathan, too, Tell me … does he even like me?”

There was a pause on the other end, as if Reese hadn’t expected her to ask that. After a pause, Reese started scolding her, “Caroline, what are you talking about? You’re an orphan, yet the Lowlands still took you in. That’s already a blessing! If Jonathan didn’t like you, why would he agree to be engaged to you? What do you think of the Lowlands?”

There it was again. Reese was trying to manipulate Caroline’s thoughts again.

Caroline made herself sound like she was crying. “But… but I heard that if someone likes you, they can’t help but want to touch you. So why is it that Jonathan never wants to touch me?”

The truth was, Jonathan did want to get close to Caroline. But Reese never allowed it.

Caroline said those words on purpose, just to hit Reese where it hurt the most.

As expected, Reese went quiet for a while.

When she finally talked again, her voice was trembling. “Caroline, Jonathan is just respecting you. He wants your wedding night to be perfect. Do you think you can find another man like that? Why are you being so careless, thinking about things like that?”

See? She’s twisting my mind again!

Caroline lowered her voice, pretending to blame herself. “Yeah, it’s my mistake. I was overthinking. I just I wish I could hold Jonathan’s hand, maybe kiss him. That’s what other couples around me do. But Jonathan always acts like he’s scared to

touch me.”

But that wasn’t true. Caroline was lying.

Jonathan had kissed her before, more than once.

Just remembering it now made her feel sick.

But, to Reese, kissing was absolutely forbidden.

Caroline said it that way on purpose, making Reese believe that both she and Jonathan were under control.

And it worked Reese’s mood got much better after hearing that.

She tried to comfort Caroline, and Caroline pretended to cry a little before ending the call.

The moment she hung up, she gave a cold snort Perfect. Keep thinking I’m still that dumb girl. When the time comes, it’ll be easier to cut you both down cleanly.

When she set down the phone, she noticed Raven staring at her with his head tilted, looking puzzled.

Maybe her fake crying had confused him.

Caroline couldn’t hold back a laugh.

“Human feelings are complicated. A simple pup like you would never understand.”

She reached out and gently patted his head

Overall, the day turned out pretty good. That night, Caroline cleaned Raven and let him sleep on her bed.

At first, Raven felt a bit uneasy. He wasn’t used to lying on such a soft bed or having Caroline hug him.

In the middle of the night, while Caroline was still asleep, he jumped down and went back to his own dog bed.

Caroline didn’t stop him. She thought building affection takes time, so she just kept on sleeping.

But to her surprise, the next morning when she woke up, Raven was right there beside her, fast asleep like a baby.

As soon as Caroline opened her eyes, he opened his too, suddenly alert.

His big eyes looked straight at her.

“Good morning, Raven.”

Caroline wrapped her arms around his big head and kissed the top of it.

Raven frowned a little and drooped his face again, almost like a cold–hearted jerk!

Still, Caroline didn’t mind. She was in a good mood, so she didn’t mind his bad attitude.

Right after waking up, Caroline went into her storage space to check on the bread she had planted earlier.

But to her surprise, nothing had grown. It was still just plain bread.

So, this black soil couldn’t grow just anything. She would need to study it more.

For now, planting bread clearly didn’t work. Maybe when her storage space was upgraded, things would be different.

She put the bread back and stepped out of her storage space.

Right now, she decided it was better to focus on stocking up supplies and dealing with Jonathan. When the apocalypse hit, she would have plenty of time to explore her storage space.

And if she got the chance, she’d try to upgrade it too.

Caroline got up, washed up, and took Raven out for a jog, part exercise, part dog walk.

After that, she brought him to a breakfast shop nearby. She checked out the menu and placed a huge order.

They were sausage rolls, scrambled eggs, oat milk, sweet donuts, crunchy almond croissants, savory meat buns, tender hash browns, sweet oatmeal, and creamy chicken chowder.
