The truth was, he’d intended to drive Marguerite home himself. There was a stubborn ache inside him, a sense of injustice he couldn’t shake—why should she be with another man for no reason at all? Why shouldn’t he have a chance, too?
That’s why he still found excuses to get close to Marguerite. After all, she hadn’t actually gotten engaged to that man yet.
Maybe once she was truly engaged, he’d finally be able to let her go.
On the drive back, Luke couldn’t help but ask, “You’ve been staying by Marguerite’s side this whole time?”
Laura nodded. “Yeah. Honestly, Ms. Taylor’s been through a lot lately. She’s been betrayed by someone she loved, and the company she built from scratch is on the verge of bankruptcy.”
“I’ve been with her almost every day these past weeks. Marguerite’s incredibly strong—she always keeps her vulnerabilities to herself, never wanting anyone to see her weak side.”
“Sometimes I really feel for her. She’s exhausted, but she keeps pushing herself, refusing to give in.”
Laura’s voice softened with genuine concern as she spoke about all that Marguerite had endured.
A shadow flickered across Luke’s eyes. He wished he could take on some of her pain for her, but he hadn’t known what she was going through—after all, the two of them hadn’t spoken in ages.
If he’d known, he would have stood up for Marguerite himself. There’s no way he’d let that bastard treat her so cruelly.
“You’re a good friend to Ms. Taylor, I can see you’ve been trying everything to help her. Honestly, Marguerite knows all about these patents. If you two weren’t so close, there probably never would have been a deal.”
