Goodbye My Arrogant Ex (Marguerite and Leonard) novel Chapter 121

Leonard Murphy had known from the start that she’d want a private conversation with him. He’d sensed, even before now, that something was seriously off with Winifred Brown—her state of mind had been troubling for some time. That’s why he’d brought her here in the first place.

Still, he hadn’t expected things to be quite this bad.

“Leonard, we’ve been friends for years. I’ll get straight to the point—I’m in a bit of a rush,” the psychologist said, not bothering with pleasantries.

That suited Leonard just fine. He needed to understand what was really going on with Winifred before he could even think about the next steps for her treatment.

The psychologist took a breath, her expression grave. “There’s something you need to hear. Her psychological issues are severe right now, but the person triggering her distress… it might be you.”

She paused, choosing her words carefully. They’d known each other a long time, and Leonard had asked her to fly in from abroad just for this. They’d always spoken frankly with each other.

Me? Leonard hadn’t considered that possibility—not even for a second.

Seeing his stoic reaction, she pressed on. “I know you’re getting engaged soon, and honestly, that’s hit her hard. She’s been obsessing over it every day. I can say with certainty—she has feelings for you. She wants to be with you.”

Leonard had sensed as much himself, but Winifred had never crossed that line, never spoken aloud what lingered just beneath the surface.

“She’s not trying to force you into anything, at least not openly. But she’s desperate to fill the void in her heart, and that’s not something you can patch up with kindness or material things. What she truly wants is your love.”

“But if you go through with your engagement and start a life with someone else, she’ll lose the one thing she wants most from you. That sense of loss will devastate her. She’s already on the edge—her eyes, her demeanor, none of it’s quite normal anymore.”

“I understand. Thank you for coming all this way for me,” Leonard said quietly.

She waved him off with a smile. “No need to thank me. We’re old friends. I had to rush this time, but next time I’m in town, let’s have dinner—with your fiancée, of course.”

Leonard nodded. He’d like that.

She softened her voice. “And Leonard, don’t carry too much guilt. I know what happened years ago—she ended up like this trying to save you. But you’ve done so much for her since then.”

“Everything she has now—her life, her care—it’s all because of you. Don’t let yourself get stuck in the past. You’ve given enough. If you never move on, you’ll never find yourself again, and you won’t ever let yourself have a real future.”
