She was getting older now, and her heart simply couldn’t take any more shocks.
“You all know perfectly well what your brother has done with the company these past few years. The company wouldn’t be what it is today without his hard work. He’s poured so much of himself into it, and every one of you is well aware of that. I don’t need to spell it out any further.”
“Since everyone is here today, I have an announcement to make. Leonard is about to get engaged to Marguerite. From this day forward, Marguerite will be our family’s granddaughter-in-law—and she’s the only one I’ll ever acknowledge as such!”
“I’m warning you all: once she steps into this family, no one is to mistreat her. If any of you dare to give her a hard time, you’ll be answering to me. Don’t blame me if I turn against you!”
The old matriarch sat at the head of the dining table, her presence alone enough to send a clear message. She’d been wanting to say these things for a long time—after all, recent family gatherings had been anything but harmonious, and Marguerite, since joining the family, had suffered more than her share of grievances.
“And furthermore, from today on, Leonard will be handling all company affairs. He’s my chosen successor, and I have every confidence he’ll only make the business stronger. I know some of you might not be happy about this, but it’s my decision!”
“I wouldn’t be handing the company over to him if I hadn’t thought it through. So none of you have any right to complain!”
Truth be told, she’d made up her mind ages ago. The only reason she’d waited was because she was afraid they wouldn’t accept it. But now that Leonard was about to start his own family, the responsibility on his shoulders had grown, and she felt it was finally time to make things official—he’d earned it, after all.
Leonard himself wasn’t concerned about titles or ownership. He didn’t care whether his grandmother gave him the company or not; all he wanted was to do right by her life’s work and make the company the best it could be.
For a moment, it felt as if the sky had come crashing down on them.
If Leonard took over the company, what would happen to their own family? How would they survive? The truth was, they’d relied on the company for years—never working, never lifting a finger, always expecting everything to be handed to them.
“This is my decision. What makes you think you have any say in it? The company is mine, and I’ll give it to whomever I choose!” the old woman replied coolly, unfazed by Aaron’s outburst.
Marguerite looked around at the family, watching as chaos erupted across the table. A deep sadness welled up inside her. She understood the old woman’s good intentions, she knew how hard her grandmother-in-law had worked all these years. But seeing the family tearing each other apart over money—it broke her heart.
