But what about yesterday—what were the two of them doing at the hospital together? Judging by the photos, they looked completely real, not edited in the slightest.
Marguerite’s head throbbed as a wave of hurt washed over her.
She glanced at the timestamp on the news article: nearly an hour had passed, and in all that time Leonard hadn’t reached out to her. She’d found out about the scandal from someone else’s lips.
How ironic.
There was no point pretending she didn’t care.
Mrs. Taylor heard the commotion and hurried over, catching the tail end of their conversation. When she realized what had happened, she immediately pulled out her own phone to check the headlines.
“Marguerite, don’t panic,” Mrs. Taylor said gently. “I don’t believe things are as bad as they seem. I know Leonard—he’s always been responsible. Even if he accompanied that woman to the hospital, there could be a perfectly reasonable explanation. Let’s wait for him to explain himself.”
“You shouldn’t jump to conclusions or let anger cloud your judgment—especially when you don’t have the full story. I trust him, and I don’t think he’d ever do something to hurt you.”
She meant every word. If Leonard really cared for that woman, they would’ve been together long ago—he wouldn’t have chosen to get engaged to someone else.
Leonard had grown up before their very eyes. He wasn’t the type to shirk responsibility, let alone betray someone he loved.
Mrs. Taylor’s unwavering confidence in Leonard eased Marguerite’s heart a little, but the ache lingered. She wanted to hear Leonard’s explanation from his own lips—not through other people.
It was Winifred.
“Leo, you’ve seen what’s happening online, right?” Her voice trembled with agitation. “These people are out of line—how could they secretly photograph us like that?”
“Leo, I know this is a big deal for you. If there’s anything I can do to help, just say the word. I can make a statement if you want. The rumors are getting out of hand!”
She sounded genuinely concerned, her words tumbling out in a rush.
But Leonard had no intention of involving her further. He spoke coolly, “That won’t be necessary. I’ll handle it. Focus on your recovery after discharge—I won’t be able to check in on you for a few days.”
