Goodbye My Arrogant Ex (Marguerite and Leonard) novel Chapter 155

Mrs. Taylor spoke with gentle sincerity, smoothing over the tension between the two of them. She refused to let a disagreement over this incident come between them. After all, if they really argued and grew upset over something so trivial, wouldn't that be playing right into that woman's hands?

No matter what, she couldn’t allow that to happen.

“I understand. Thank you for being willing to see things from my perspective.”

Leonard had braced himself, expecting the whole family to blame him—especially since he and Marguerite were so close to getting engaged. Anyone would be upset if something like this happened right before an engagement. But instead of scolding him, Mrs. Taylor offered comfort and practical advice. It touched him in a way he hadn’t expected.

He had never known this kind of warmth or felt the support of family before. For as long as he could remember, he’d always faced things alone, confiding only occasionally in his mother. But she was usually too busy with her own pleasures to ever truly share his burdens.

This feeling—being understood and cared for—was entirely new. It settled something deep inside him, making him feel strangely at peace.

Even Hogan, who’d acted indifferent and grumbled about the whole mess, had secretly started pulling strings and calling in favors yesterday to help smooth things over. Leonard had noticed—and appreciated—every bit of it.

As they chatted downstairs, Marguerite suddenly appeared at the top of the stairs, still in her pajamas and clearly just out of bed.

He paused, regret plain on his face. “I should have explained the situation to you right away. You shouldn’t have had to find out like that, or be left alone to worry. I promise, if something like this ever happens again, you’ll hear it from me first.”

Leonard laid out everything from the night before, not leaving out a single detail. Marguerite listened, still stung from her own anger. She kept asking herself why she was so upset—after all, what business was it of hers who he spent time with?

They were supposed to get engaged soon, but there was no real foundation between them. She’d always felt the engagement was just a way to appease their parents’ wishes.

“Alright, I understand,” she said at last, her tone cooling. “But I think we should postpone the engagement. With everything that’s going on, it just doesn’t feel right.”
