The sounds from the other end of the line made Leonard’s head throb. It had been less than a week since she’d started rehab, and already she was on the verge of giving up. The intensity would only ramp up from here—how would she possibly make it through?
But there was no way out of it; Leonard had to deal with this himself and find a way to comfort her. What other option did he have? If she refused treatment now, the whole recovery process would just drag on even longer.
“Go check on her,” Marguerite urged softly. “Honestly, this is pretty normal. She’s never had to push herself this hard before.” Marguerite understood the pain all too well, and she was quick to back Leonard up.
She didn’t mind if Leonard went to see her, but deep down, she could sense that this woman was always looking for excuses to make a scene. It was obvious—she just wanted more of Leonard’s attention.
That possessiveness was unsettling, even a bit frightening. Every episode felt so dramatic and exhausting—it was enough to give anyone a headache.
Still, none of that changed the fact that they owed her. There was no real way to refuse, no way to simply walk away.
“Leo, they’re just so cruel to me,” Winifred complained bitterly over the phone. “Every day, their standards are impossibly high. It doesn’t matter how much I protest or how upset I get—they just ignore me. I’m not even allowed to cry out, but I’m in so much pain. I really can’t take it anymore—why can’t I just let off a little steam?”
She wasn’t exaggerating; every day was its own kind of torment. It felt less like recovery and more like a living hell.
She was at her breaking point—she didn’t even want to come in anymore. But there was always someone assigned to watch her, to push her into those grueling rehab sessions.
She’d assumed a private facility would be gentle and understanding, that they’d treat her with respect. Instead, they seemed determined to push her to the brink.
And now this.
Guilt twisted in his chest. No matter what he did, it never felt like enough. He owed Marguerite so much more than this.
“Don’t worry about me,” Marguerite said gently. “She’s waiting, and you need to go. I’ll be fine on my own tonight. Besides, I know this is something that has to be taken care of—we can’t keep putting it off.”
“And honestly, try not to blame her. Everyone needs time to adjust, and it can be a really painful process. We can’t truly understand what she’s going through, so let’s just try to be patient, okay?”
