“But if you keep pushing through, you’ll see results. All your hard work will pay off, so don’t give up now, no matter how tough it gets.”

The elderly woman couldn’t help but offer a few words of comfort. More than anything, she genuinely hoped Winifred would walk again.

“Grandma, honestly, there have been so many times I almost couldn’t take it anymore. The pain is just… unbearable. Before, I couldn’t feel my legs at all—I’d gotten used to that numbness. But now, suddenly having to endure so much pain, it’s almost impossible not to break.”

“But I’m lucky. Leo’s been with me this whole time. He’s always there to encourage me, and whenever anything comes up, he’s the first one by my side. Having him here just makes everything feel less scary, and I feel so much safer.”

As she spoke, Winifred’s face lit up with a bittersweet smile. She raised her voice ever so slightly, as if to make sure everyone in the room heard every word.

“If you need anything, just call him. But Leo’s been swamped at work lately—since I handed over the whole company to him, he’s had a lot on his plate. I hope you’ll understand if he can’t always drop everything to be with you.”

Winifred put on a look of helpless innocence. In truth, the agony of rehab was more than she could bear.

“I know you’ve been through so much, Winifred. But if you keep fighting, you’ll walk again, just like everyone else. For years, I’ve felt so guilty—if it weren’t for Leonard, none of this would’ve happened to you.”

“If things had gone differently, it would be Leonard in that wheelchair, not you. The Murphy family owes you more than we can ever repay, and I know we’ll never truly make it right. But please, if you ever need anything, just tell me. Whatever’s within my power, I’ll do for you.”
