Goodbye My Arrogant Ex (Marguerite and Leonard) novel Chapter 188

As a woman herself, she knew all too well what was really going on.

“I’m not sure I understand what you mean,” Winifred said, feigning innocence. “Maybe it’s because Leo and I have been spending so much time together with his physical therapy lately, and that’s made his fiancée misunderstand. There’s honestly nothing between us. Sometimes I just can’t manage on my own, so I ask him for help.”

“I know where the line is. I’ve always kept my feelings to myself and never wanted to come between them. Besides, I know he’s getting engaged soon.”

Winifred played the part of the clueless ingenue, pretending not to grasp what Mrs. Murphy was implying.

But Mrs. Murphy saw right through her. “Winifred, it’s just the two of us here—why bother with the act?”

“Don’t think I don’t know exactly what you’re after. They’re getting engaged soon, and if Leo felt anything for you, do you really think he’d be marrying someone else? I’ve never meddled in my son’s relationships—who he chooses is his business. Even if he wanted to marry you, I wouldn’t stop him, because I trust him to make the right choices for himself. But in the end, he didn’t pick you. So don’t fool yourself any longer. There’s simply no future for the two of you.”

“You know as well as I do how much he’s done for you over the years. If you have any sense, you’ll take a generous sum and start fresh in another city. Your life will only get better from there. If you want to continue your rehab, the Murphy family will make sure you get the best care—just not here.”

Mrs. Murphy’s words were blunt and unambiguous, her tone leaving no room for argument. It was a final warning—if Winifred refused to take the hint, she’d have only herself to blame for what happened next.

Winifred’s voice trembled as tears rolled down her cheeks, her desperation plain to see.

“I’m not trying to throw you out,” Mrs. Murphy replied, her expression cool. “I’m offering you a chance to start over somewhere new—that’s a good thing for you. Don’t twist my words. No matter where you are, I’ll make sure you’re cared for.”

“If you’re smart and really think about what’s best for yourself, you’ll do as I say. I have no wish to harm you. I just want you to have a better life, to meet new people.”

Mrs. Murphy had expected this wouldn’t be easy. She knew it would take more than a single conversation to make Winifred let go.
