“Leonard, you’ve come back at just the right time. I returned from abroad specifically to talk to you about the company. Since you’re not really part of the Murphy family, we can’t hand the company over to you. Grandma only considered you before because Aaron was getting on in years and wasn’t ready to take over. But this family isn’t lacking in capable people—I’m back now, and I can take charge of the company myself.”
Baron’s words barely settled before Aaron shot up, his face flushed with anger. “What’s that supposed to mean, Baron? Do you think we even wanted to take over your family’s company? The only reason the old Mrs. Murphy trusted Leonard with it was because she believed in him. Don’t fool yourself—if Leonard hadn’t managed things so well all these years, the company would’ve gone under long ago! He’s the reason it’s grown to what it is today!”
Aaron’s voice grew harder, his glare fixed on Baron. “You’ve been gone for years. Back then, you wouldn’t lift a finger to help with the company. You walked away and left this family for us to manage. Now you think you can just waltz back in and reclaim it? It’s not that simple!”
Mrs. Murphy’s eyes burned with pain and resentment as she watched Baron. She knew she wasn’t blameless in all this, and whatever feelings they’d once shared had long since vanished. Still, seeing him now made her blood boil.
“And what right do you have to lecture us?” she snapped. “You were never faithful to our marriage from the start, and now you have the nerve to come back and scold me? I haven’t even called you to account for abandoning us. All these years, we raised your son for you, and not only have you never thanked us, you act like you’ve done us some kind of favor!”
Mr. Murphy glared at her with equal bitterness, his eyes dark with old grievances. He never imagined he’d be saddled with such a reputation—and for so many years at that.
“Enough!” The elderly Mrs. Murphy’s voice cracked through the room, strained and trembling. “Can’t you all just sit down and talk calmly for once? If you want me to live a few days longer, stop this shouting right now.”
It was almost laughable.
“Mom, I know your health hasn’t been good lately. I came back to help you. There’s no way we can let a stranger take over the family business. You’ve trusted me all these years, and I’ve picked up experience and strategies abroad. I’m confident I can run the company well.”
Baron straightened, his tone firm but measured. “Even if I’m not up to speed on every detail yet, Hogan will be by my side every step of the way. We’ve talked it over and starting today, we’ll be taking over the company together. I promise, we’ll make it better than ever.”
