He felt like a stranger in this house now—everything was different from before. In the past, he could have spoken up without a second thought, stood his ground without hesitation. But now, faced with this moment, the words caught in his throat. He simply didn’t have the confidence anymore.
“I know perfectly well who I want to put in charge of the company,” Mrs. Murphy said coldly. “I don’t need a lecture from you, and I certainly don’t need your advice. Haven’t you been living comfortably overseas all these years? I’ve even heard you have a child of your own now.”
“All these years, you’ve pushed your own mother out of your life, haven’t you? If you truly cared about me, you wouldn’t have turned into the person you are today. So don’t bother saying any of this to me.”
“And another thing—don’t come here and disrupt my life anymore. Just look at me. If not for you and your brother, I might have lived a few more good years.”
Mrs. Murphy had heard these words too many times before. She knew exactly what her sons were after. The only thing that mattered to them was their own interests and getting their hands on the family business. Never once did they stop to consider whether they were actually capable of running it.
“Leonard may not be related to me by blood, but he’s been by my side since he was a boy. I raised him myself. From the day I fell ill until now, he’s the only one who’s truly cared about me. As for the rest of you, is it really just about your share of the inheritance?”
Mrs. Murphy felt a deep sorrow for it all. Maybe she had spoiled them too much, always striving to give them a better life, always believing they deserved it after the hardships they’d endured as children. She’d thrown herself into her work for so many years, perhaps neglecting them without meaning to. Maybe that was why she’d let so much slide, always trying to make it up to them.
In the end, none of it mattered. All that was left in their eyes was the promise of wealth. If it weren’t for the two of them, Mrs. Murphy might not have ended up so frail, so worn down, so sick from worry and heartbreak.
As for Leonard, standing there quietly, he felt he didn’t really belong in this house anymore. At this moment, he found himself completely unable to speak. After all, he was no longer truly a part of this family.
