Goodbye My Arrogant Ex (Marguerite and Leonard) novel Chapter 31

“Ben…”

Fiona’s voice, choked with tears, instantly threw Benjamin into a panic.

Ever since Fiona was nearly kidnapped last time, a shadow had lingered in his heart—he couldn’t shake the fear that something terrible would happen to her again.

“What happened? Don’t cry, okay? Where are you? I’ll be there right away!”

Between sobs, Fiona stammered, “I’m sorry, it’s all my fault… I accidentally let it slip to your mom about Maggie wanting to break up with you, and she fainted from the shock.”

She began weeping harder. “I didn’t mean to—I’ve already brought her to the hospital, but she’s still in the ER. I’m so scared… I don’t know what to do…”

“It’s not your fault. I’m coming now.”

Benjamin’s face darkened, anger swelling inside him until it was almost impossible to contain.

He turned on Marguerite. “My mother’s in the hospital because of you. Is that what you wanted?”

“Answer me!”

His eyes were bloodshot, wild—Marguerite instinctively took a step back, suddenly wary.

“What does that have to do with me?”

Marguerite frowned, struggling to keep her composure as Benjamin dumped all the blame on her without a second thought. It was almost laughable.

There was a time, she thought bitterly, when she actually believed this man would care for her, love her for a lifetime. What a fool she’d been—blind and hopelessly naïve.

“My mother has always treated you well, Marguerite! If you have even a shred of decency left, you’ll come to the hospital with me. Otherwise, I swear I’ll never forgive you!”

“You’re insane.”

“Ben, you’re finally here. She’s still inside, they haven’t let anyone in yet. It’s all my fault—I never should have said anything.” Fiona sprang to her feet, rushing over to Benjamin, her eyes red and brimming with tears.

Instinctively, Benjamin put a comforting hand on her shoulder. “It’s okay, don’t cry. This isn’t your fault.”

Then his gaze hardened, turning on Marguerite like a knife. “If you hadn’t insisted on breaking up, my mother wouldn’t be in the ER right now. If anything happens to her, I hope you’ll never forgive yourself!”

Fiona’s tears fell harder, her voice trembling. “Maggie, I swear I never meant for this to happen—how could you think that of me?”

Marguerite’s eyes were cold as ice. “Fiona, you deserve an Oscar for this performance. If you put half as much effort into anything else, you’d be a superstar by now.”

Fiona only sobbed harder, shivering pitifully. “I never meant it, Maggie, I promise.”

Marguerite shook her head, too tired to argue. “You know the truth better than anyone.”

“Enough!” Benjamin barked, stepping forward and shielding Fiona like she was made of glass. “Not everyone is as manipulative as you, Marguerite.”
