Marguerite couldn’t help but share her first impression, though she knew the timing of his arrival was suspect. Baron had obviously brought him back for one reason: to win over his grandmother and secure the company.
“You’re being too naive,” Leonard said, his voice tight. “He’s putting on an act. Every word that came out of his mouth was scripted by his father.”
“If he really cared about Grandma, he would have come back years ago. Why now? But you know what? I can’t be bothered to care anymore.”
He didn’t want to get involved. If his grandmother truly wanted to hand the company over to Antony, he wouldn’t stand in her way. He had no real attachment to it. If he left, he was more than capable of starting his own company. And if Antony’s presence meant he would pretend to care for his grandmother for a while, at least the old woman might find some temporary peace and happiness. Leonard wouldn’t interfere with that.
“You’re not wrong,” Marguerite conceded. “I just wish you could leave this family behind. Only then can we truly start our own life. You’re so talented, you’d be successful anywhere. I know you could build your own company and make it even better.”
She hated seeing him so worn down, so exhausted by the constant family drama, only to be unappreciated by everyone.
“I’ve wanted to escape this family for a long time,” he admitted. “I only stayed for Grandma. Now that her other grandson is back, if she decides she wants to give the company to him, I won’t make it difficult for her. I’ll be the first to suggest it.”
“Besides, the old woman has a soft spot. Once she accepts Antony, it’s all smooth sailing from here. I’d say she’s already started to accept him.”
Aaron was practically bursting with pride.
“You were right, it was a brilliant idea,” Baron agreed. “Antony is staying at the hospital to look after Mom. Even though she said she needed to think, I could tell she’s already warming up to him.”
