After finishing the drink, Marguerite felt much better. She sat on the edge of the bed for a while, waiting for her strength to return before slowly getting up.
The events of yesterday replayed in her mind. She’d acted in the heat of the moment, unable to control her own strength. If something truly serious had happened, she didn’t want to imagine the consequences.
She was still uneasy about Mr. Zade. There was no way of knowing how he was now, but if the ambulance had gotten him to the hospital quickly enough, he should be all right.
Just as she was about to pull herself together and go find Hogan, the doorbell rang.
Marguerite walked over and opened the door.
“Ms. Taylor, correct? I’m Mr. Zade’s attorney. I’m here regarding last night’s incident—my client has filed assault charges against you and already contacted the police. They'll be coming by to speak with you shortly.”
An attorney?
She almost laughed.
Marguerite’s face was as composed and icy as ever. She replied coolly, “Last night I acted in self-defense. He can do whatever he wants.”
She wasn’t the least bit afraid.
“But Mr. Zade is currently in the hospital,” the lawyer pressed on. “He needed ten stitches in his forehead and was diagnosed with a severe concussion. We have the medical report and other evidence ready.”
He held out a folder of documents.
Marguerite didn’t even look at it. Remaining calm and unruffled, she said evenly, “Then I’ll have my own attorney gather evidence. I’m not afraid.”
“Ms. Taylor, honestly, Mr. Zade doesn’t want to make this harder than it has to be. As long as you pay his medical bills, he’s willing to drop the matter—on the condition that you come and apologize to him in person. That’s all he’s asking for.”
“That’s why I’m here today. I believe this is the best way for you to resolve the situation.”
Apologize to him? Go see him?
