Marguerite had never been so utterly lost for words because of anyone before. She couldn’t wrap her head around why this man insisted on making such an embarrassing scene—what was he really after?
“Benjamin, I will never get back together with you. Not now, not ever. I’m not coming back, and I’m about to get engaged. You already have someone you love. We’re both better off this way.”
She drew a steadying breath, forcing herself to keep it together. There was nothing to gain from getting angry with someone like him—Benjamin never cared about anyone else’s feelings anyway.
“Before I call the police, you’d better just leave. Don’t make this uglier than it already is for everyone.”
It wasn’t until this moment that Marguerite saw Benjamin’s true colors, clearer than ever before. How had she never noticed how stubborn and unreasonable he could be? He didn’t care about anything or anyone but himself.
What she worried about most was her mother—Mrs. Taylor—who was so upset, Marguerite feared it might take a toll on her health.
“Marguerite, please, stop being angry at me. Come home with me. We can start over. There’s nothing between me and that woman, I swear—I never lied to you!”
“Marguerite, you’ve misunderstood me and Fiona. There’s nothing between us. You’re imagining things!”
“I know you never really accepted me since the beginning, but I promise, I only have eyes for you. Now and always, it’s only Marguerite.”
“Just give me a chance to prove myself. I swear things will be different this time.”
