Edmund forced an expression that twisted between a grimace and a smile. “I… guess… I can prep… for that.”
He stepped out of the office, only to hear Hera’s voice calling from behind, “Thank you! Let me know once you’re all set. Please, Ed! It’s on you now!”
He felt miserable. How could Hera trample on his dignity like that?
Edmund left without answering. If it weren’t for her looks and money, he would have flipped a table right then and there. But for now, he had to endure this until Hera stopped caring about that unremarkable, insignificant man. She was the only one who could secure a place for him and Bobby at the pinnacle of wealth.
He looked up at the building, greed flashing in his eyes. ‘I’ll make you fall in love with me again, Hera. I’ve done it before. I’ll do it again. I’ll remind you.‘
His grimace finally disappeared.
As soon as I got home, I started writing a resignation letter. The 2.8 million dollars needed for my parents‘ house was an amount I could never earn as a firefighter. I had no choice but to quit.
But what could I do next? Even if I started a business, making that kind of money seemed impossible. I also couldn’t claim the money owed from my divorce just yet.
What was I going to do?
I felt utterly lost. This was a sum someone like me could never grasp. It was astronomical. I was struggling to process it.
Then, a note slipped out of my pocket. It felt like fate had a plan already. I recognized Rhea’s handwriting. “670k!” That was what she had promised.
Hope settled over me. This was my way out—at least for now.
“Wait. How can I think like this?” I scolded myself.
Rhea was the one who lost something in that one–night stand. I should be making up for her loss of innocence, not trying to use her for money.
God, had I become a piece of shit too?
“Not if I pay her back one day,” I told myself, sighing.
I was simply short on cash. I had no other choice. I’d treat her money as an investment in my company. Once I started making a profit, I’d repay her with interest.
With that settled, I called Rhea.
She answered almost immediately. “Is that you, Sebastian?!”
I stayed silent for a moment before admitting, “Yes.”
“Oh my God! You called! I didn’t think you would! I’ve waited all day! I’m so happy! Aaahhh! Wait, let me calm down…”
‘Oh no. No, no, no. She’s too happy to hear from me.‘ I felt awful. First, I took her virginity, and now I was basically asking her for money. How was I supposed to accept that?
“Sebastian, are you still there? Why aren’t you saying anything?” she asked, sensing my silence and growing nervous.
After another pause, I finally asked, “N–Nothing. I was just wondering… Did you mean what you wrote?”
