I Fought for His Future. Now I’m Fighting for Myself novel Chapter 9

Sean stood outside Charlotte's hospital room, his hand hovering over the doorknob. He took several deep breaths, trying to steady himself.

For days now, Charlotte had barely spoken to him, still upset about the baby. The date he had agreed with Kylie to end things was approaching fast. He should've made a clean break by now. However, the closer it got, the more tangled his heart became.

Every time he saw Charlotte, the words just wouldn't come out. Somewhere deep down, he found himself hoping he could drag it out a little longer. The feelings he had for Charlotte were supposed to be nothing more than gratitude, right?

After a long hesitation, he finally pushed the door open and called softly, "Charlotte?"

The room was empty. The sheets had been changed, the bedside table cleared.

For a moment, he froze. That same wave of panic from before surged back into his chest. He rushed out and grabbed a nurse passing by. His voice trembled with alarm. "Where's the patient in this room? Where did she go?"

The nurse blinked in surprise. "Dr. Johannson? Ms. Summer was discharged. Didn't she tell you?"

His vision darkened. It felt like someone had struck the back of his head with a hammer. "Discharged? What for? She just had a miscarriage. She hasn't even recovered yet. At least if she stayed here, I could still visit. Maybe she went home."

His words came out in a rush as he fumbled for his phone. He dialed her number, one he knew by heart. The call rang and rang before being cut off.

He stared at the screen in disbelief and tried again. This time, the line was busy.

Why? Everything had been fine just yesterday.

He frowned. Yes, they had argued because of the miscarriage, but not to the point where she would block him. His pulse quickened as he turned on his heel and ran toward the parking lot. Home was his last hope.

All the way there, he tried to convince himself. Maybe she just felt more comfortable recovering at home. Maybe she pressed the wrong button.

They had depended on each other for over 20 years. She had never left him, not even through the hardest times. Why would she now?
