Testing the waters, he asked aloud, “Ms. Lynn, what if the quadruplets’ biological father suddenly showed up? And what if he was incredibly wealthy and wanted to marry you, to give you a life of luxury? Would you accept?”

Still, he had asked with such a straight face that she felt she owed him a serious answer. Her smile faded. “Mr. Bragg, even if the children’s father turned out to be a billionaire, and even if I could pretend not to hate him for what he did, I would never, ever marry him.”

“And even if I did,” she continued, her voice firm, “I would never want to be some pampered wife living off his money.”
