When the news broke, the whole Ramirez family rushed to the hospital. Charlotte Roberts moved as quickly as she could, leaning on Gabriel and Savannah for support, her face tight with worry.
“Please, let both of them be alright,” she whispered again and again, almost like a chant.
Savannah joined in, voice trembling. “I hope everything’s okay. We’ve never done anything wrong. God wouldn’t let something happen to the baby, right?”
Gabriel shot her a warning look. “That’s enough, Savannah,” he said quietly, his face tense. He didn’t want her words making things worse for his already anxious mother.
They reached the hallway outside the operating room. Alexander was there, pacing back and forth, his face impossible to read.
“Alexander, how’s Camila?” Charlotte stepped forward, pushing past Gabriel and Savannah. She gripped her son’s arm, her voice shaking.
“She’s still in surgery.”
Charlotte’s eyes darted down, catching the blood on Alexander’s suit. She felt her heart drop.
“What happened? Weren’t you all at a dinner party? How did something like this even happen?”
Savannah edged closer, lowering her voice. “Alexander, I heard Natalie Watson pushed Camila. Is that true?”
The call they’d gotten had been so vague. Only after Savannah called the winery did she hear that Natalie and Camila had gotten into some kind of fight, and both of them ended up falling down the stairs.
Right then, the doors to the operating room opened and Ms. Bell, the surgeon, came out, her face serious.
Alexander walked over, heart pounding. “How is she?”
Ms. Bell shook her head, her voice heavy with regret. “I’m so sorry, Mr. Ramirez. We did everything we could, but we couldn’t save the baby. Camila’s stable for now, but she’s very weak and needs plenty of rest.”
Alexander’s whole body seemed to tense up, his eyes growing distant.
Suddenly, Hazel called out, catching Charlotte just before she collapsed in a faint.
