Alexander froze for a moment, then lifted his gaze to meet Camila’s eyes.
It took him a while to find the words. “Camila, I’m sick. I don’t want to drag you down.”
Camila shook her head, her voice steady. “Alex, that doesn’t matter to me. No matter what, I want to marry you. I want to be with you, to take care of you, to stay by your side.”
Alexander looked at her, something unreadable flickering in his eyes.
Camila sat down next to him, trying to prove how much she meant it. “We’ve already lost so much time. I don’t want to marry anyone else ever. Alex, let me be with you, okay?”
She reached out and took his hand, looking at him with all the sincerity she could muster.
“But…”
“No buts,” she cut him off. “Stop overthinking it. I’m not leaving you, no matter what.”
Alexander let out a soft, resigned laugh. “Alright. I’ll listen to you.”
A huge smile spread across Camila’s face as she snuggled into his arms.
Alexander’s lips flattened, his eyes drifting away, his whole expression turning serious.
After a moment, Camila straightened up. “Alex, have some juice. It’ll help you feel better.”
She pulled a glass bottle out of her insulated bag, poured some juice into a cup, and handed it to him.
“I made this myself before I left the house. It’s grapefruit juice,” Camila said.
Alexander looked at her for a second, then took the cup. “Grapefruit juice?”
“Yeah. It’s good for your heart, so drink up.”
He nodded and took a sip without saying anything else.
“Have some more,” Camila encouraged.
As she watched him drink, something flickered in her eyes, but she quickly hid it.
“What do you think? I’ve got new info. Usual spot,” Mike said.
Just as he was about to hang up, Camila spoke quickly. “Let’s change the location. Someone I know saw me last time. I don’t want Alexander to find out. I’ll send you the address. Meet me there tomorrow at noon.”
The next day at noon, Mike got Camila’s message and left work after lunch.
He drove nearly an hour before arriving outside a villa on the edge of town. When he rang the bell, the door opened almost immediately.
Mike took one look at Camila, who was still fully dressed. “Why didn’t you change?”
At their previous meetings, he always insisted she dress the way he liked before he arrived.
“I just got here too. Didn’t have time,” Camila replied, avoiding his eyes.
Mike didn’t seem bothered. He smiled, slid his arm around her waist, and led her inside. “That’s fine. It’ll be more interesting if I help you get changed.”
Just as he started to lead her upstairs, Camila stopped him. “Can we talk about the news first? If we don’t, I’ll just keep thinking about it and won’t be able to relax later.”
