I Slapped My Fiancé—Then Married His Billionaire Nemesis novel Chapter 387

Chapter 387 New Parents: Sleepless

We’d been told by the maternity nurse, before she went on leave, not to pick the babies up every time they cried.

She’d warned us that it could make them dependent on being held, and that we’d only be exhausting ourselves in

the long run.

But right now, we had no choice. It was the only thing that worked.

Ashton kept them upright, one on each shoulder, their tiny chins resting against him. It was the only way to stop them feeling bloated. Holding them horizontally would have made it worse.

Meanwhile, I turned on the lamp, sat down at my desk and started rummaging through the bookshelf.

What are you looking for?Ashton asked.

I’m trying to find something about how to soothe crying babies.

He gave me a look that said, Seriously? Now?

But I kept going, flipping through the pages with purpose. When I first found out I was pregnant, I bought loads of books about pregnancy and newborns. I’m sure one of them talked about why babies cry.

I hadn’t actually finished reading most of them, but stillbetter late than never.

After a few minutes, I found a research paper that explained why newborns cry and what methods might help

calm them down.

First off,I said, we can rule out any health issues. The doctor at the hospital today said both babies are developing well and perfectly healthy, so that’s not the cause.

Ashton nodded.

Second,I went on, it’s definitely not hunger.

It must be the vaccination,Ashton said after thinking it through.

I nodded. Yeah, that’s very likely. Since the day they were born, Minnie and Mickey have never really been hurt. But today was their first time experiencing pain.I paused, frowning slightly. If that’s the case, then this crying is probably more psychological than physical.

Any ideas?

We could try walking them for a bit and only put them down once they’re sound asleep.

Let’s try it.

To be safe, let’s start with ten minutes for the first round.

Got it.

Ten minutes later, Ashton gently laid them back down.

Minnie and Mickey burst into tears again without missing a beat.

He sighed and picked them up once more, pacing again.

Silence.

The second attempt lasted fifteen minutes. When he put them down again, the twins let out another round of noisy protests.

He had no choice but to keep walking.

Silence again.

On the third try, he extended it to twenty minutes. This time, he looked close to breaking. The babies hadn’t even been down for two seconds before the howling started again.

Why does it feel like they’re getting louder each time?he muttered. Still, he picked them up and kept walking.

Make it thirty and see if that works,I said.

So Ashton paced back and forth by the bed, one baby in each arm, yawning as he went. After half an hour, he finally tiptoed to the cots and carefully set them down.

The two little monsters didn’t stir. This time, they actually stayed asleep. Ashton stared down at them, his exhaustion melting into a fond smile. They looked impossibly sweet now, nothing like the tiny demons they’d

been moments ago.

Ashton yawned so hard his eyes watered.

Go get some sleep,I said.
