I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra) novel Chapter 102

He’d been off ever since I woke up, his words dripping with passive-aggressive digs. What was his problem? Was he mad that I didn’t sleep with him and left him to soak in a cold bath all night? Or was he just sexually frustrated and taking it out on me?

Grandpa immediately shot back, “You shut your mouth. No one asked for your opinion.”

He then turned to me, his expression softening into a warm smile. “Zephyra, don’t mind him. As long as you like the job, that’s all that matters. Is it tiring?”

With Grandpa defending me, I felt a little better. “Not at all. It’s work that I love and I’m good at.”

Design was second nature to me. Besides, I wasn’t just a regular employee; I was hired at a senior level. It was more about brainpower than grunt work. Of course, I had no intention of telling Steven that. The less he knew, the better. Once we were divorced, we could finally stay out of each other’s business.

Grandpa beamed, showering me with praise about how I could succeed at anything I put my mind to.

Steven scoffed. “You’re a fresh graduate who became a housewife. What could you possibly know how to do?”

“Quit. If you really want to work, I can arrange a position for you at one of the subsidiary companies.”

I let out a bitter laugh. “Doing what? Being your personal chef, or the pretty face at the front desk?”

He frowned. “Whatever you like.”

“I don’t like any place that you’re in,” I said flatly. “And you will not interfere with my work.”

Grandpa suddenly started coughing, though he didn’t say a word. He just gave me a sly wink, a look of pride on his face, as if he was thrilled I finally had the guts to stand up to Steven.

I watched as a crack formed in Steven’s indifferent mask. His handsome features twisted into a dark scowl, and I couldn't help the smirk that tugged at my lips.

After five years together, I knew exactly what he was thinking. Steven was a control freak. He needed to have every outcome, every person, firmly in his grasp. Any deviation was unacceptable.

I beamed at him. “Mr. Lancaster, you’re so good at your job, I’m sure your long legs are just as capable. I’m just a slacker who needs a car to get to work on time. You can take a nice, leisurely walk. It’s only about twelve miles. I’m sure you can make it. You got this!”

With that, I flipped him the bird, and just as his expression turned thunderous, I slammed on the gas and sped away.

In the rearview mirror, his tall, imposing figure shrank into the distance. I couldn’t see the look on his face, but I could guess.

He was absolutely livid.

A triumphant smile spread across my face as I remembered the last family dinner when he’d abandoned me, forcing me to walk for what felt like miles in high heels in the pouring rain, my legs nearly giving out.

What goes around, comes around, Steven. Now it’s your turn to taste a little of what I went through.
