I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra) novel Chapter 121

I watched and listened, and the moment he hung up, my eyes were bright with curiosity. “What’s wrong with Verna? Are you going to see her now?”

Steven glanced at my eager expression, his handsome, refined face darkening. Instead of answering me, he turned to Gordon.

“Take her back to the hotel. Make sure she’s safe.”

“Hey, wait a second,” I said, grabbing Steven’s arm, desperation written all over my face. “Can I come with you? I promise I won’t get in the way. If something’s happened to her, maybe I can help.”

I didn’t know the exact moment he’d fallen for Verna on his trip abroad, but what if it was this one? If I was serious about getting proof of his affair, this was the perfect opportunity.

Steven’s strong brows furrowed. He shook my hand off, his voice ice-cold. “Don’t be ridiculous. Go back to the hotel with Gordon and stay there.”

With that, he turned and strode away, his pace hurried and agitated.

I wondered what could have happened.

I started to follow, but Gordon stepped in my way.

“Mrs. Lancaster,” he said, adjusting his black, gold-rimmed glasses and offering a gentle smile. “Let’s head back to the hotel and wait for Mr. Lancaster. This is your first time abroad, and you’re in an unfamiliar city. It would be dangerous if you got separated and lost.”

He was right. I’d never been to Taros, and the language barrier made me instinctively uneasy. Seeing that Steven was already long gone, I gave up and went with Gordon to retrieve our luggage and head for the hotel.

On the way, Gordon, likely sensing my displeasure, tried to reassure me. “Please don’t worry, Mrs. Lancaster. There’s nothing personal between Mr. Lancaster and Ms. Garcia. I was the one who told her we were coming to Taros and when we would land. She was probably just calling to welcome him to the city now that some time has passed.”

Sensing my mood shift, Gordon quickly tried to smooth things over on Steven’s behalf. “Rest assured, Mrs. Lancaster, Mr. Lancaster has changed a lot recently, too. He only cares about you now. I’ve seen him staring at your photo several times, lost in thought. It’s obvious he’s becoming interested in you. All your past efforts are finally paying off.”

I nearly choked, looking at Gordon in shock. “What?!”

“I said all your past efforts are paying off,” he repeated earnestly. “For the past year, you’ve cooked for him and cared for him through thick and thin. You’ve poured your love into every detail of his life. He may not show it, but he can’t live without you anymore.”

He was probably just not used to losing his live-in maid who fawned over him.

But that wasn’t what shocked me. I frowned. “You said he was staring at my photo? What kind of photo? Our wedding picture?”
