Was that the reason he had turned down such a bright future in his past life? My heart ached for him. Horace could be so foolishly selfless. Rachel and I had once drifted apart, but he had never given up on our friendship.
“Are you worried you won’t have time for us once you’re famous?” I said softly. “That’s easy. When you make it big, you can hire me as your personal designer. We’ll see each other every day. Whenever you need jewelry for an event, I’ll design it for you. You’ll be the most dazzling star on the red carpet.”
“And then,” I continued, “I can sell replicas of the designs, and Rachel can handle the sales. Rachel and I will make money, and you’ll get to see us. What do you think? Sounds like a good plan, right?”
I could hear the smile in his voice as he chuckled. I pressed on, encouraging him. “Horace, if you want to do it, then do it. Life is short. You should fight for your dreams, stand on the stage you were meant for, and shine. Besides, I would love for us to meet at the top. Don’t overthink it. Just go for it.”
He had given up so much for me in his past life. This time, I wanted him to walk his own path, to live for himself, not for me.
“‘Meet at the top,’” he repeated thoughtfully. Then, he laughed softly. “Okay.”
“Then I’m officially your number one fan, and Rachel is number two,” I declared. “Horace, the Songbird, we’ll always support you!”
His laughter grew warmer. “Send me your address. As soon as I get things sorted out here, I’ll come find you.”
I told him the name of my hotel. He seemed pleased, and I heard him murmur, “If I stand in the brightest spotlight, maybe then your eyes will finally see me…”
I didn’t quite catch the last part, and I was about to ask him to repeat it when there was an urgent knock at my door. “Mrs. Lancaster, are you asleep?”
The person outside sounded frantic. “Horace, I have to go,” I said quickly. “I’ll talk to you later.”
“Ask her to take care of him. She’s a doctor. Even if she’s a surgeon, she’ll know what to do for a fever.” She would certainly know more than I did. Besides, a worthless vase like me was hardly fit to care for the great Mr. Lancaster.
Gordon frowned. “I don’t think that’s a good idea. A man and a woman, alone… Mr. Lancaster would be angry if he found out.”
My eyes widened as I caught the key words. “A man and a woman, alone?” Hadn’t Verna asked to stay? Had Steven refused? That didn’t make sense.
“Yes. After you went to your room, Mr. Lancaster sent Ms. Garcia’s friend away. Now it’s just Ms. Garcia in the room next door. I just took Mr. Lancaster’s temperature. It’s 40 degrees. He must have known he was sick. If he wanted Ms. Garcia’s help, he would have asked for it when he was still conscious. Instead, he came to find me.”
Gordon looked at me desperately. “Mrs. Lancaster, I know you and Mr. Lancaster have had a misunderstanding, but you can’t just let him suffer…”
