My stomach clenched. I stared at Steven, and as soon as he hung up, I spoke.
“Don’t you dare tell me you’re leaving to go to Verna.”
Steven looked down at me, his voice heavy.
“She’s badly hurt. Her head needed stitches, and she’s on the verge of a breakdown…”
I cut him off, my voice flat and emotionless. “So you’re just going to abandon me and run to her?”
“Steven, her injuries have nothing to do with me. I’m injured, too. I haven’t even had my check-up, and you’re just going to leave me here?”
His handsome brow furrowed. I stared into his eyes, a cold smile spreading across my face.
“Have you even considered what might happen if they come after me while I’m alone? My phone is smashed, the battery is almost dead—I can barely make a call. What am I supposed to do, fight them off myself? Are you not afraid they’ll kill me?”
“Shut up!” Steven snapped, his handsome face suddenly stern. “You’re so young. Why are you always talking about dying? Do you have any idea how irresponsible that is?”
His sharp tone stunned me. I’d never seen him so sensitive about death. It was as if someone important to him had died.
In our past life, he was never like this. He once told me he’d have a coffin ready for me.
Steven seemed to realize he’d overreacted. He pressed his lips together, his gaze fixed on me.
“I’m not abandoning you, and I won’t. Verna is in the main hospital wing. They can do your tests there. As soon as the doctor is done with your face, we’ll go together. You can get your check-up there instead.”
“Verna is young. This is the first time she’s experienced something like this. She needs someone she trusts to comfort her. Otherwise, I’m afraid she’ll lose her mind.”
Honestly, if anyone else had said that, I might have thought I was being unreasonable. But this was Steven.
I let out a small, humorless laugh.
“And this isn’t the first time for me? She’s not that young; we’re the same age. What, do I have to start crying for you to realize that I was scared, too?”
I stared at his changing expression. “Steven, if you would just be honest and admit that Verna is more important to you than anything, that you’re willing to leave me here to fend for myself just to go see her, I wouldn’t find this so pathetic. I wouldn’t despise you so much.”
I took a deep breath and gave him a grateful smile. “Okay.”
Once the doctor left, I turned back to Steven, all my emotions carefully masked. I waved a dismissive hand.
“Fine. I don’t care what your relationship is with her. Whether she’s the love of your life, your savior, or whatever else, it doesn’t matter to me.”
“I’m telling you right now, I’m getting my tests done here. If you dare to leave, and I manage to get through my check-up without getting attacked, I’m going to find a male prostitute. I hear it’s legal here. Don’t worry, you cheat on me, I cheat on you. It’s only fair. Anything extra is a bonus. Don’t thank me.”
I wasn't going to get emotional. In my past life, I was the fool who hurt herself over a cheating scumbag. This time, Steven could be the one to get angry.
A storm gathered in Steven's eyes, his low voice thick with anger. "Zephyra."
My face was a mask of cold indifference. "Don't raise your voice at me. We're getting a divorce as soon as we get home. You can't stand me, and I'm sick to death of you."
