I Walked Away And He Lost His Mind (Zephyra) novel Chapter 158

“In my office.”

With that, he turned and walked in.

Gordon wouldn’t even look at me as he quickly tidied up.

I rubbed my nose, set down my coffee cup, and followed Steven into his office with the documents. The room was immaculate, with no trace of the mess I had made last time.

Steven sat in his chair. He was dressed casually today in a white shirt and a blue trench coat that made his already fair skin look even more striking, almost softening his features.

But his expression was blank. Fearing I would set him off and ruin the negotiation, I even got him a bottle of water from the mini-fridge.

“Mr. Lancaster, here you go.”

He glanced at the water bottle but didn’t look at me, his lips curling with sarcasm.

“I couldn’t possibly accept. You think so little of me. Don’t trouble yourself with false kindness.”

I…

So the passive-aggressive routine had begun.

I wisely held my tongue, placed the water bottle in front of him, pulled up a chair, and spread the three copies of the divorce agreement on his desk.

“Alright, let’s talk about the divorce. I’ve revised the terms. There are three options here. The first…”

Before I could finish, he cut me off, his voice flat.

“That night, I told you to wait for me at the hotel. I told you we needed to talk. Why didn’t you wait? Why did you leave with Horace?”

The memory of his words from that night flashed in my mind: *Let me know what the hospital report says. Call me when you get back to the hotel. Wait for me there. We need to talk. Stay away from him when you get back. Don’t let him get hurt because of you.*

I pressed my lips together, watching him.

Steven’s profile was perfect, his expression calm. I couldn’t read his mood from his voice, but I felt a suffocating pressure in the air. It felt like he was holding something back, restraining himself.

“I promise that after the divorce, we will be strangers. I will never appear before you again. Just pick one and sign. I have all my documents with me. As soon as you sign, we can go to the registrar’s office.”

Steven was a stickler for details, so I had come prepared. He was back, which must have meant that, like in our past life, he had realized his feelings for Verna.

Offering him a divorce now, with such reasonable terms, he should have been happy to accept.

Steven leaned back in his chair, his dark eyes scanning the documents on his desk, but he didn’t move. He was unnervingly still.

Just as I was about to urge him to sign, he leaned forward, his long, elegant fingers picking up the agreements.

And then, he tore all three of them to shreds.

He crumpled the pieces into a tight ball and, with perfect aim, tossed them into the trash.
