To be reborn, only to be dragged back into his life and tormented all over again…
A fierce, burning hatred consumed me, and it was written all over my face.
“You hate me?” Steven’s eyes were bloodshot, the veins in his forehead bulging.
“Zephyra, you listen to me. As Mrs. Lancaster, you can have anything you want. You can buy the most expensive luxuries without a second thought. You have the best of everything.”
“You want money, right? What’s ten million? I’ll give you a hundred million. Just don’t ever mention divorce to me again.”
I was still furious. “You think money can solve everything? Do you think I need your money? A hundred million is nothing—”
My voice caught in my throat. The tears stopped. My nose was red, but my eyes were wide and focused on him.
A hundred million?
That was… an offer I couldn’t refuse.
A new wave of tears welled up, this time for my own poverty. Damn him. Why did he have to be so rich? Why couldn’t I be the one with the money?
“Really? How would you pay? A lump sum, or annually?”
Seeing my sudden change, Steven’s lips twisted into a sarcastic sneer.
“One hundred million a year. However you want it.”
One hundred million a year!
I had never dreamed of earning that much in my entire life. My current salary, even with a generous bonus, was only a few hundred thousand at best.
Suddenly, my anger seemed to dissipate, replaced by a deep confusion.
“You’re back, so you must have realized you have feelings for Verna. Why are you suddenly acting like you’ve lost your mind, refusing to divorce me and throwing a hundred million at me? What’s the catch?”
Maybe Verna’s injuries were so severe she needed a full-time caretaker, and he wanted me to do it. But we could still get a divorce.
“There are conditions,” Steven said, his dark, intense eyes fixed on me. “First, you move back in with me. I want you to go back to the way you were before.”
So, he wanted me to be his maid again.
For a hundred million, I could handle that. “And the second condition?”
That was out of the question.
I knew why he was doing this. He was lonely, or angry at Verna. It had happened several times in our past life.
After a big fight with her, he would drag me to bed and take his frustrations out on me. He was always rough, and sometimes I couldn’t even get out of bed the next day.
This had to be the same thing. Until Verna fell in love with him, he needed an outlet.
The allure of the money vanished. I wrenched my hand free and looked at him with cold, hard eyes.
“I will only agree to your first condition. The second one is impossible. I would rather sleep with a dog than with you.”
I stood up, and he didn’t stop me.
I smoothed my messy hair and clothes, then looked down at the man whose face was now a mask of cold fury.
“Steven, since we can’t agree on a divorce, we’ll settle this in court.”
“And you listen to me. I will do whatever it takes. I will get a divorce from you in this lifetime.”
