In an instant, coffee splattered across Steven’s face, neck, and pristine white shirt.
The business partner stared, dumbfounded, looking at me in utter disbelief. Gordon gasped, a sharp intake of breath. “Mr. Lancaster…”
Only Steven remained composed. His handsome face was a mask of indifference, as if he wasn’t angry at all. He calmly turned to his partner, a faint smile on his lips.
“My apologies, Zachary. Let’s reschedule our meeting for another time, shall we?”
Zachary scrambled to his feet, forcing a smile. “Of course, of course. Please, Mr. Lancaster, take care of your business. We can talk later.”
Gordon, ever the professional, stepped forward. “Zachary, allow me to see you out.”
The sound of their footsteps faded, and Gordon thoughtfully closed the door behind them.
Steven remained on the sofa, his deep, cold eyes fixed on me, the pressure in the room suffocating.
“Did you come here to throw a tantrum like a spoiled princess? Apologize to me. And clean this up.”
He was sitting, and I was standing over him, yet in the face of his powerful presence, I felt like the one being looked down upon.
I laughed coldly, placing the empty cup back on the table.
“Apologize? You’re the one who should be apologizing to me. What the hell do you want? First, you bribe my lawyer and try to brainwash me into staying with you. Now, you’re forcing me into this business collaboration, and the second I show any hesitation, you threaten my job. You’re a failure as a husband, and you’re a failure as a human being. Will you die if you stop tormenting me?”
Steven’s dark eyes bored into me, his voice devoid of any warmth.
“Since you’re so self-aware, you should know to behave. You have two choices: either you apologize and clean this up like a good girl, or I force you to do it before I have Myron fire you.”
I stared him down for three long seconds, then pulled a few tissues from the box and began dabbing at his face and neck. When absolutely necessary, I knew not to provoke a rabid dog, and he was a rabid dog who always followed through on his threats.
A bright, defiant smile spread across my face, but my voice was dripping with sarcasm.
“Steven, you become more detestable by the day. What do you have besides money? You have a rotten character and you use shameless tactics. How could anyone possibly like you?”
“What if I did?”
His dark eyes stared straight through me, and he uttered two simple words. “Unblock me.”
I had thought he’d dragged me here to pick a fight, to settle scores. I never imagined it was all just so he could insult me and then demand I take him off my block list.
I burst out laughing, crossing my arms and looking at him mockingly.
“It’s my phone, I’ll do what I want. What are you going to do if I don’t? Are you going to take control of my phone too? I’d love to see you try.”
Steven stared at me, an inexplicable wave of irritation washing over him, an uncontrollable restlessness churning in his gut. His handsome face grew darker.
I thought he was going to say something, but in the next second, his long, slender fingers shot out and snatched my phone right out of my hand.
