Chapter 24
“The sums add up to millions. Is all that not enough to convince you to attend one family dinner? Who do you think you are?”
I was speechless. My father was indeed insatiable, taking money without a shred of guilt. And Steven had always obliged. As a son–in–law, he was dutiful. As a husband, he was decent enough. He just didn’t love me, so he never cared when I was hurt.
I wasn’t much better. I knew our marriage was an alliance and that business dealings between our families were inevitable. But once feelings become entangled with too many interests, even genuine affection starts to look like a performance.
“Fine,” I agreed readily. “But you can leave my father out of it. Whatever he wants to do is his business. What you have to give me is a one–million–dollar divorce settlement. If you agree to that, I’ll go.”
Another cold laugh. “Whatever you say. I’ll pick you up tomorrow.”
“Alright. I’m not at home. I’m at…” I was about to give him the address when he cut me off, stating it with perfect accuracy. “Rachel’s place.”
I was stunned. “How did you know? Are you following me?”
He let out another derisive sound. “Don’t flatter yourself. You’re broke. If you didn’t go back to your parents and you can’t afford a hotel indefinitely, where else would you go besides Rachel’s?”
Was he looking down on me again?
My face burned with anger, and I ground my teeth. “Steven, we are business partners right now. Watch your tone!”
I had only one close friend. After we married, I told him about Rachel, but I never mentioned that she and I had a falling out because of him. It was logical that he could guess.
