Flavian’s POV
I slammed the door after loading the luggage into the patrol car and headed to the airport. Bonfim beside me found it all amusing while I was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Sabrina was huffing and grumbling in the back seat.
"Flavian, this is outrageous!" Sabrina wouldn't stop complaining, fidgeting from side to side in the seat - it was irritating.
"Miss, you might want to stop squirming so much on that seat. Last night this car transported a fugitive who had been hiding in the bushes, and we haven't had time to clean it yet. He was in quite an unpleasant state," Bonfim said, and I glanced at him, knowing he was making up the story to mess with Sabrina.
"Oh, was this the car that transported Remela?" I asked, making up a random name and playing along with Bonfim. This would be fun.
"Yes, it was. He hadn't showered for a month, hiding in the bushes, digging through garbage. I heard they had to shave his head and make him remove all his body hair," Bonfim said, and I could see Sabrina looking horrified in the rearview mirror.
"Why would they do that?" I asked, already knowing what Bonfim would make up.
"Lice! He was covered in lice!" Bonfim said casually, and Sabrina had a fit.
"For God's sake, Flavian, get me out of here! I don't want to get lice, Flavian! How could you do this to me? Stop this thing and let me out!" Sabrina was panicking.
"Look miss, I'm sorry I forgot to tell Moreno. I just remembered now. So don't move around too much, you have long hair, and they say lice love long hair," Bonfim found his path to entertainment and wouldn't stop.
I wanted to stop the patrol car and start laughing, but I couldn't. I went along with Bonfim's lie and let him put on his show. It was hilarious. When we arrived at the airport and I opened the door, Sabrina jumped out of the car, frantically running her hands all over her body as if trying to shake off non-existent lice. The scene was absolutely comical. I took her bags and placed them on a cart for her. But Bonfim wasn't done yet.
"Listen, I'm going to speak quietly because if anyone hears this, your bags will have to be burned. When you get home, don't take them inside. Send them straight to be washed and disinfected," Bonfim spoke in a hushed voice.
"But why, sir?" Sabrina's eyes were welling up with tears.
"Because Remela had three dogs that were transported in the holding cell, and they had fleas. You know, fleas can linger in the environment and might have gotten into your bags. Send everything to the cleaners and ask them to disinfect it all," Bonfim warned, and Sabrina's eyes grew wide.
"Fleas? You transport animals in there? Not just people?" Sabrina was on the verge of panic.
"That was clever! Let's hope things get resolved during this time. But why did you need me? And why did we take the patrol car?"
"Because I know Sabrina. If she had been alone with me all this time, she would have caused trouble, and I didn't want to be made a fool of. And we came in the patrol car because there's no way I want her in my car leaving even a single strand of hair for my little one to find."
"You're really smart," Bonfim laughed.
"Sorry for pulling you away from your duties and dragging you along."
"Don't apologize, it was very entertaining. She'll be scratching herself imagining lice and fleas for at least a week." Bonfim burst out laughing, and I couldn't help but join in.
"Where did you come up with that story about lice and fleas?" I asked, wiping away tears from laughing so hard.
"Oh, that was a case from a few years back. All the officers who rode in the patrol car got lice and had to shave their heads, including me. I was so mad at that prisoner, my wife almost filed for divorce because I passed lice to the kids," Bonfim laughed. "After that, I have the patrol cars sanitized frequently, but this one hasn't been cleaned these days. So, anything could happen." Bonfim laughed as we headed toward the door.
