Manuela’s POV

I spent the day mulling over everything Flavian had said about what his father discovered regarding my family's company. I never knew anything because I never wanted to know. Many times my brother tried to explain things to me and give me what he said was mine, but I wasn't interested. The only thing I ever wanted in life, besides studying and being independent, was for my mother to love me and treat me well.

"What's going on in that pretty head of yours? I can hear the gears turning in there." Flavian hugged me from behind. I was standing on the bedroom balcony, looking at the stars in the sky as if they held the answer.

"Just thinking about this inheritance my grandfather left," I said.

"Want to talk about it?" Flavian turned me around and looked into my eyes.

"I keep wondering if my mother's only interest in me is because of this money." I sighed, and Flavian picked me up, carrying me to sit with him in the bedroom armchair.

"Why do you say that?"

"Because she won't leave me alone, but she doesn't like me, and I don't understand that. You know, about six months before I turned eighteen, she started treating me well. She wasn't exactly a model of motherly love, but she stopped hitting me, although she kept me on a tight leash. She even tried to pretend." I dove into my thoughts as I spoke, as if I had gone back to those days. "She started talking to me more, dragged me to church with her, even called me daughter. "It was smart of you to let someone you trust handle everything," Flavian kissed the top of my head, and I continued speaking.

"The day before my birthday, I asked my father to convince my mother to let me sleep at my brother's house, saying he would take me out to dinner. She agreed, said it was better that way, so she wouldn't have to put up with Cam in her house. Early the next day, I signed the power of attorney for my brother, who handled everything through the notary in the neighboring town to avoid gossip in our city. When I returned home, my mother was waiting for me with a big smile. She got up from the sofa with open arms, apparently happy with my arrival, and put her arm around my shoulder, making me sit down. There was a man in the room whom I knew - he was the notary from our city. My mother then told me that since I was eighteen, we would fix the mess my grandfather had made, that I should sign a power of attorney giving her full authority to manage my inheritance, because I wouldn't know how to take care of the assets and it wasn't right to leave it in Cam's hands since he was another woman's son. It always irritated me when she referred to him that way, as if he wasn't family. I feel he's more my brother than Julian is."

"That's because he loves you and is good to you, and you love him too." Flavian was rubbing my back while my head rested on his shoulder.
