Rita’s POV

That little rat was very well protected. I thought I was lucky when I saw her leaving the building, but she was the lucky one. I didn’t know where those police officers came from. I was going back home empty-handed. The worst part was that Calvin's deadline was almost up. But I had to find a way.

I got home and Madeline was waiting for me. She was a very useful friend, the detective's wife. He did everything she wanted, and she did everything I wanted. She was a religious zealot, always buried in church, but she was a sinner - a useful sinner. She gossiped about everyone's life in this city, knew everyone's dirty secrets. "Rita, where's your daughter? Didn't you find her?" Madeline looked at me curiously. It was better to play the victim.

"Put our partnership into action. I know what to do to break those two up and what I need from you," I said, certain that I would be able to bring that little rat home.

"Ma'am, things have changed. I got to know the young lady better and changed my mind. I no longer want to separate them. In fact, I hope they stay together," he said, leaving me confused.

"Is this some kind of joke?" I asked, irritated.

"No, I'm serious. You don't have my support to separate them. On the contrary, if you try, you'll have me as an enemy." But why did this man change his mind like that? I couldn't understand.

"But, Mr. Moreno, you said that -" He interrupted me before I could finish.

"Rita, I already told you, I changed my mind and I don't want to separate our children. Manuela is an excellent young woman and my son is happy, that's what matters. I understood that, and if he's happy, I'm happy too," he said firmly.

"Sir, this is absurd!" I protested, but it was useless. I heard him tell someone on the other end of the line that he was coming, before speaking to me again.
