Irresistible Boss Succumbing to Your Touch (Maria Anita) novel Chapter 548

Gisele’s POV

How did I end up here, in this tiny, stinking cell? It was impossible that one of my clients reported me. And where was that idiot cop I paid to give me information about the investigations? I gave him good money every month. But he was not among those who arrested me. Something had gone wrong, but what was it? Either way, I had to think of a way to get out of here fast.

"Face the wall and hands behind your back," a police officer said as he approached the cell.

I did what he ordered without questioning. I had not said a word yet and would continue to stay silent. It was better not to make trouble. He handcuffed me and took me to a room where two men were already sitting and waiting. One was the detective who arrested me, with a huge grin on his face as if he had won the lottery. The other one was not among those who arrested me - who could he be?

"Gisele! What a pleasure to have you in my humble police station. I hope you're enjoying your stay, but it will be short. By tomorrow at the latest, you'll be heading to prison," the detective laughed; he was pleased with my situation.

"Prison?" I asked - this was getting serious.

"Oh yes, this is just a waypoint, let's say," that detective was mocking me. "This here is investigator Breno. He has some questions for you, and I'm very eager to hear what you have to say."

The detective introduced the other man, who turned out to be a police officer too. I just looked at him. I knew my situation wasn't good, especially since they caught me red-handed, but I would stay very quiet until I had an idea of how to get out of this situation.

"Gisele, the questions I'm going to ask you are about your activities from twenty years ago." When I heard this, I couldn't contain my surprise. I already imagined what he wanted to know, but why after so long?

"Whatever it is, it was a long time ago. There's nothing that could interest the police," I stared at him while speaking.

"Oh, that's where you're wrong. There's a lot of police interest in your past." Breno smiled. "To begin with, Gisele, did you know Mrs. Rita Menezes Blanco?"

"Who didn't know Mrs. Blanco in that town? She married the dairy factory owner, a man of good financial means in the town, everyone knows the family," I answered because this was public knowledge.

"How do you know that?" I looked at him without understanding the question. "When you left town, Mrs. Blanco had not yet married Mr. Orlando Blanco. In fact, he had just become a widower."

"Well, someone must have told me, I don't know..." I had made a mistake. I would have to be more careful with these questions.

"Who do you still keep in touch with in that town?" The investigator was putting me in a difficult situation.

"No one, but I've run into some people by chance over the years." That was the best answer I could come up with.

"Tell me, Gisele, you delivered Orlando's first wife's baby. What went wrong? Why did she and the baby die?" He didn't ask if I had performed the delivery; he stated it as a fact. How did this man know I had done the delivery? What had happened in that town that I didn't know about? Had they caught Rita?

"Women die in childbirth every day," I shrugged, trying to appear indifferent and calm. "She was just unfortunate. I was helping, providing a service. The baby was premature, and the woman had dangerously high blood pressure."

"And why did you perform the delivery instead of a doctor? Why wasn't the woman taken to the medical center? From what little I know about pregnancies, she was a high-risk patient, given her high blood pressure." This man seemed to know too much.

"I don't know. I know I was called, did my job, and left when both the woman and child were alive. If they died afterward, I don't know why," I was getting nervous with all these questions.
