Irresistible Boss Succumbing to Your Touch (Maria Anita) novel Chapter 549

Breno’s POV

I watched Gisele as she talked on the phone, and without a doubt, she was a cunning criminal full of tricks. I cannot deny that curiosity was eating away at me. Who could she have called? My bet was that she was warning this Rita person about a police officer's sudden interest in past events, but I could not be certain since she had used an old telephone, the kind that did not even have redial capability. I was surprised that thing still worked.

As soon as she left the room, I expressed my curiosity to the detective.

"I am wondering who this woman called," I said, still looking at the door.

"My friend, this little woman is quite the shady character. She thinks she is very clever, but she forgot she is in a police station. I also want to know if she called any accomplices." The detective smiled and walked to the desk.

The detective opened the top drawer and beckoned me over. There was a caller ID device that he explained was connected to the phone and recorded both incoming and outgoing call numbers. It was something as simple and old as the telephone on the desk. It was not the most proper way to obtain information, probably even unethical, but it would serve my purpose well enough, after all, this Gisele was not exactly a person attached to morality, let's say, and I just wanted to know who she had called.

The detective fiddled with the device and wrote down the number on a piece of paper. I looked carefully and copied it into my phone's notepad.

"This area code is from the city where she used to live. I think I know who she called." I looked at the detective, who pulled a cell phone from the drawer and turned it on.

"Let's confirm your suspicions then." He dialed the number and put it on speakerphone.

"Hello," a woman with a strong voice, sounding ill-tempered, answered.

"Who is this?" The detective asked in a gentle voice.

"Rita. Who's calling?" She was not friendly at all.

"Rita? Are you Maria's sister?" The detective could not contain himself.

"No. I don't know any Maria, goodbye." She was ready to hang up.

"But isn't this the Castle residence?" The detective persisted.

"No, this is the Blanco residence," she was impatient.

"Do you have the Castles' number?" This man had a somewhat childish sense of humor - the more he annoyed Rita, the bigger his smile grew.

"I don't even know them, son. Now leave me alone, I've got things to do." And she hung up the phone.

"Was your hunch right?" He asked, laughing at the grumpy woman who had answered the phone.

"Bingo!" I said and smiled with him.

"So our target called an old acquaintance and asked her to find her a lawyer," he twirled his pen on the desk while thinking, "Could she be in that contributor database?"

"No, I already checked, but Rita's name isn't in there," I commented.

"But that file shows the names of the 'patients,' as Gisele likes to call the women who seek her services, and Rita was never Gisele's 'patient.' We'll probably find the deceased's name in there." The detective's reasoning made sense.

"Yeah, could be. I hadn't thought of that." I looked at him and walked toward the computer.

I had only searched for Rita's name and was looking through the "VIP Patients" folders chronologically from newest to oldest until I came across Sabrina Teles's file. After that, the detective had Gisele brought in, and I didn't finish reviewing the archive.
