Clive caught himself—his voice had come out sharper than he meant. He took a breath, trying for a gentler tone as he answered Timmy’s earlier question.
“You don’t really know your mom,” he said, fingers tapping the steering wheel. “Sometimes… well, she can be a bit clingy. Kind of a pain, honestly.”
Kristen already had it out for Amelia. Clive figured it was easier to tell a little white lie than to waste his time trying to talk Kristen around or smooth things over.
Timmy just looked confused, scratching his head. But before he could ask anything else, sleep pulled him under and he drifted off in the back seat.
Driving past the West Medicine headquarters, Clive glanced out the window—and did a double take.
That was his cousin Sammy.
He watched as Sammy got out of a car, clutching a folder, and hurried toward the company’s front doors. A woman dressed like a secretary stepped out to meet him.
A wave of unease washed over Clive.
Had Sammy managed to connect with West Medicine’s new owner—the mysterious Ryan Packman?
For the first time in a long while, panic crept in.
If Sammy landed a deal with West Medicine, Clive’s job as general manager could be history.
He felt a real sense of crisis hit him.
Right then, his phone buzzed. It was his father, Bailey.
“Dad,” Clive answered.
He paused, then gave a short, dry laugh. “You know, this is starting to feel a lot like seven years ago.”
Clive stayed silent.
Seven years ago, Amelia had given up everything for him—built him a ladder to climb higher than he ever thought possible. This time, he knew she’d help him again.
To Amelia, he was her whole world. If he wanted something, she’d find a way to give it to him.
Even if it meant losing herself.
“Don’t worry, Dad,” Clive said, a confident smile on his lips. “Amelia has never let me down. She never will.”
Amelia—the medical genius—wasn’t just his wife. She was his most trusted, most loyal ace in the hole.
