Karma Doesn’t Sleep: The Revenge Queen Rises novel Chapter 157

Amelia stared at the message, lost in silence.

The words didn’t even feel familiar anymore.

She remembered—before and after they got married—Clive almost never asked her out first. Every single date had been her idea. She’d always been the one to tiptoe around his schedule, trying to make things work.

If this had been before, just getting a message like this from him would have had her grinning like a fool. She’d have dropped everything to get ready, and the happiness would have stayed with her for days.

But now? She just felt tired. She didn’t want to have lunch with him.

She was about to reply, ready to tell him she was meeting Rachel at noon, when Clive’s call came in and interrupted her.

Her fingers slipped, and she answered without thinking.

“Amelia.” Clive’s smooth, familiar voice filled her ear.

She’d picked up instantly. Of course she had. She was still waiting for his call, wasn’t she?

Clive was in his office, and just hearing her voice seemed to relax him. He didn’t give her a chance to say anything. “I already made a reservation. The food’s great at this place.”

“I—”

“Amelia, meet me downstairs in ten minutes.”

He hung up before she could get a word in.

Amelia just stared at her phone, rubbing her temples.

Whatever. He’d already ordered that three-hundred-million-dollar machine. She could just treat this lunch like a meeting with a client.

In the general manager’s office, Cameron was sprawled out on the sofa across from Clive. He was there to talk business, but mostly, he’d come to share the latest gossip he’d dug up.

“She used to cling to you like glue. No matter what you did, you couldn’t shake her off. Now she’s trying to play it cool, act like she’s hard to get. Too bad…” Cameron snorted, his voice dripping with sarcasm. “She can’t even pull it off. One call from you, and she’s right back to chasing after you.”

Clive didn’t argue. He’d gotten used to Cameron’s attitude toward Amelia a long time ago.

Cameron had never liked her.

But… playing hard to get?

Thinking about how different Amelia had been lately, Clive suddenly wondered if Cameron was right.

Ever since last night, that frustration he’d been carrying around had started to fade.

Maybe all of Amelia’s distance, even her coldness, was just her new way of trying to get his attention.
