Will paused, suddenly realizing he’d totally overlooked the little convenience store by the entrance since he moved in.
He tried to explain. “What I wanted was already sold out at the other place. This store just happened to have it.”
Amelia grinned, teasing, “So what is it that’s so good you’d cross the street for it?”
Will reached into his bag and pulled out a bread roll, holding it up with a calm look. “This. It’s pretty good.”
Amelia nodded. “I’ll have to try it next time.”
Will smiled easily. “Since we bumped into each other, want to grab dinner before heading home? We do live in the same building.”
Amelia blinked, surprised. “Wait, you’re in the same building? Seriously?”
He nodded. “Yeah. I left in a hurry this morning, didn’t get a chance to mention it.”
Amelia hesitated. She had work to finish at home and really didn’t feel like cooking. She was about to say yes when her phone rang in her bag.
“Sorry, let me get this,” she said, digging it out. The caller ID showed Penny’s teacher, Ms. Arnold.
A wave of worry hit her. She answered right away. “Hello, Ms. Arnold?”
“Mrs. Parker, I tried calling Mr. Parker, but he didn’t answer, so I’m calling you,” Ms. Arnold said, sounding serious. “Could you come to the school right now?”
Amelia’s heart skipped a beat. “Is Penny okay?”
“Ma’am,” he called out as she hurried over.
She didn’t bother correcting him. “Where are Penny and Timmy?”
“Miss Penny’s up in Ms. Arnold’s office, third floor. Master Timmy’s in the gifted program in the red building. They have a guest lecture today, so he’s done in about ten minutes. I’m just the driver, so I couldn’t really step in with Miss Penny. I tried calling Mr. Parker a few times, but he didn’t answer,” the driver explained, looking helpless.
Amelia clenched her jaw. How could he be this irresponsible and still call himself their father?
She pushed down her anger and headed upstairs.
As she reached the third floor, she heard a sharp woman’s voice echoing down the hall.
