“What good is your apology? Our son got beat up like this. We need a real explanation!”
Amelia stood up and gently pulled Penny behind her, shielding her with her own body. She bowed deeply to the two mothers, her tone steady and sincere.
“I’m sorry. No matter the reason, Penny was wrong to hit your kids. That’s on me as her mom—I take full responsibility, and I apologize to both of you.”
Behind her, Penny froze. Then, with her cheeks burning red, she grabbed Amelia’s hand and tugged hard, trying to pull her upright.
“Mom, don’t apologize!”
It was the first time she’d ever called her “Mom” out loud.
Amelia’s heart skipped a beat.
Jacob’s mom let out a cold, bitter laugh. “You think a simple ‘sorry’ is enough? If you really mean it, get on your knees and apologize. Then we’ll talk about compensation.”
Penny’s eyes welled up and tears spilled down her face as she panicked.
She threw her arms out, blocking Amelia from moving forward.
“No! I won’t let you kneel and apologize!”
Ms. Arnold frowned, but she couldn’t afford to offend any of these parents. And with clear evidence that Penny had hit someone, she was stuck.
Will had been quiet this whole time, but finally he couldn’t hold back.
“That’s enough. You’re out of line,” he said sharply.
“And who are you supposed to be?” Jacob’s mom narrowed her eyes, sizing Will and Amelia up with a look full of suspicion. She gave a shrill, mocking laugh. “Wow, Penny’s mom. You’re really something. Bold enough to just bring your man right into your daughter’s school, huh?”
Jinx slowly shuffled into the room.
“Ms. Arnold, Penny only hit them to protect me,” she said quietly, her head still down. Her hand shook as she pointed to Jacob and Roberto. “They made me do their homework…and took my lunch money. Penny was protecting me. She’s really nice. She did charge me a little protection fee, but since then, she’s always looked out for me…”
Amelia was bursting with pride for her daughter—until she heard those last three words. All her motherly pride instantly crumbled.
She stared at Penny, totally in shock.
“Penny, did you really charge her for protection?”
Penny looked a little embarrassed. “You never let me have spicy snacks at home, so I just asked her to bring me a small bag every day…”
Amelia was left speechless.
