Dad was usually a pretty decent guy, but when he lost his temper, he was absolutely terrifying.
Penny shrank back, clutching her brother’s arm, her whole body tense with fear.
“Timmy, take your sister to the car,” Amelia called out gently.
No matter how badly things fell apart between her and Clive, she refused to let the kids see her unravel.
As soon as Timmy had Penny safely in the car and they drove off, all the warmth vanished from Amelia’s eyes.
Clive stalked over, his face thunderous. Will stepped in front of Amelia protectively, brows drawn tight.
Clive glared at Will, his stare sharp and cold. “What, Will? Didn’t get enough last time? Still can’t keep away from my wife?”
Will bit back, “First off, Amelia already asked for a divorce. Second, you’re just a bully who only knows how to throw punches. Seriously, how are you any different from a caveman?”
Clive stepped closer, anger simmering in his eyes as he stared Will down. Then, turning to Amelia, he gave a twisted smile. “If I don’t agree, the divorce isn’t happening. Remember, Amelia? You used to chase after me, begging for my love. When you were in my bed, swearing you’d never love anyone else, Will was nowhere in the picture…”
That was it for Will. Something snapped inside him at the sound of Clive’s mocking, sleazy voice.
“Shut up!” Will yelled, swinging his fist straight at Clive.
But Clive was quicker. He dodged easily and Will stumbled, almost falling.
Clive let out a cold laugh. “Really, Amelia? After being with me, you’re interested in a guy like that? Did you forget how you used to swear you’d only ever love me when you were tangled up with me?”
All her old feelings—every way she’d ever loved him—Clive now threw back at her as weapons.
He actually enjoyed seeing Amelia lose it, like before—yelling, furious, totally out of control. He loved knowing he could push her buttons, even if it hurt her.
But this time, Amelia just looked at him with a cold, disgusted stare.
“Clive, is that all you’ve got? Bringing up sex like it’s your trump card? Those years with you—I might as well have been bitten by a stray dog.” She let out a sharp, mocking laugh. “And don’t kid yourself. You really weren’t anything special.”
Clive’s face twisted with rage. “Amelia!”
She ignored him, turning to Will with a softer expression. “Thanks for coming with me, Will. Go on. I need to talk to him alone.”
Will frowned, clearly worried. “Amelia…”
Just hearing Will say her name made Clive’s temper flare again.
“My wife wants you gone. Get lost. Or didn’t you understand?” Clive snapped.
Earlier that night, Sammy had sent him copies of photos and chat logs between him and Kristen, threatening to use them unless Clive left the board. That was why he’d missed Ms. Arnold’s call about Penny.
So Amelia’s love had turned to hate, and now she wanted payback.
Weirdly, Clive felt a twisted sense of satisfaction instead of anger.
He pulled out a cigarette, lit it, and eyed Amelia through the smoke.
“I never slept with Kristen,” he said flatly. “Yeah, she’s special to me. She saved my life. She’s been good to Penny and Timmy, filling in for the mother they lost. You should be grateful for that.”
Sometimes when you’re so angry, all you can do is laugh.
Amelia stared at Clive’s self-righteous, clueless face and realized she couldn’t even be disappointed anymore.
He deserved everything Kristen was doing to him.
“My kids don’t need her. Did the entire Salmeron family die out, so you need a secretary to raise your kids?”
Her words hit like knives and Clive’s eyes went cold.
“Watch your mouth, Amelia. The Salmerons are your family, too!”
