Karma Doesn’t Sleep The Revenge Queen Rises novel Chapter 309

He yanked open the car door and, without hesitation, bundled Amelia into the passenger seat.

Then, even though he was supposedly sick, he slid behind the wheel. The engine roared and he floored it, shooting down the street like he was running from something.

Amelia clung to her seatbelt, speechless.

She sneaked another look at Ryan. Did he look sick at all? Not even close.

But the longer they drove, the weirder it felt.

When the car finally stopped, it wasn’t at a pharmacy or a hospital. They were by the river.

Ryan was already out, so Amelia had no choice but to follow.

“Ryan…” She tried to call after him, but the wind whipped her hair straight into her mouth.

The next moment, Ryan took off his hat and plopped it onto her head. He stood in front of her, tall and solid, blocking the wind. The gusts just slipped by on either side of him.

She realized she was standing in his shadow, safe in this little pocket of calm.

“Amelia.”

“Yeah?”

Ryan shoved his hands in his pockets. His messy hair fell over his eyes, making his gaze seem even deeper, almost endless.

“I’m your boss.” His voice was calm but serious. “If anyone gives you trouble, just come tell me. Got it?”

Amelia blinked, caught off guard. She thought he meant the blacklist thing, and was worried she’d mess up the project or cause issues.

“Understood.” She nodded, all business. “If I run into any problems on the project—not personal stuff—I’ll report them to you right away.”

Ryan fell silent.

She’d missed the point completely.

He almost laughed, but some things were just too hard to say out loud.

He knew her too well. For years, all Amelia did was give. She never leaned on anyone.

And after what her marriage to Clive put her through, he knew he couldn’t push. If he got too close now, he’d just scare her away.

“Forget it…” His voice was so soft she barely heard.

“What?” She looked up, confused.

He met her eyes. “I said, let’s get back in the car.”

He drove her home. Halfway there, Amelia asked him to pull over.

Copying what he’d done for her before, she ran into a pharmacy and came back with bottled water and fever medicine that wouldn’t make him sleepy.

She even unscrewed the cap before handing it to him.

She thought it might be Selfhelper and answered.

“Hello, this is Amelia.”

There was a pause, and then Clive’s voice. “It’s me.”

Her expression turned icy. She didn’t even hesitate—she went to hang up.

“Amelia.” Clive rushed to say, “I just wanted to ask—do you want the stuff you left at the house? If you want it, I—”

She cut him off, cold as ice. “You can throw it away or burn it. Do whatever you want.”

Before she could hang up, Clive blurted, “I wasn’t the one who got you blacklisted! It was Lu—”

She ended the call. The only thing left was the busy signal.

Clive closed his eyes and took a shaky breath, then hurled his backup phone at the floor, smashing it to pieces.

She’d heard that last “Lu—” but what did it matter?

For years, whatever Cameron did to her, Clive let it happen.

Now that he realized she had leverage, that she could threaten his position at work, suddenly he was desperate to explain.

Amelia blocked his number, rolled over, and went to sleep.
