“Drive safe, okay?”
“I will.”
Clive barely glanced at her as he answered, already distracted. The car door slammed shut behind him and he sped off without a second thought.
Left standing there, Kristen let out a frustrated huff and stomped her foot. She pulled out her phone and hit dial. “Mom…”
Down in the underground parking lot, Amelia finally realized what she’d just done. She’d actually hugged Ryan. How had she lost control like that?
She let go of him immediately, stepping back until there was a solid meter between them.
“I’m really sorry, Mr. Packman,” she blurted. “It was just the heat of the moment. I wasn’t trying to be inappropriate, I swear.”
Ryan just looked at her, silent. One second she was clinging to him, the next she was desperate to keep her distance. Typical.
He watched her, taking in the way she stood there, awkward and determined to put space between them. His eyes darkened, hiding whatever he was really feeling.
“Amelia,” he said quietly.
She looked up at him, her eyes bright and clear. He’d seen those eyes full of love before—just never when she was looking at Clive. With Clive, she always seemed so calm and distant.
Ryan locked his gaze on her, intense and unblinking. He took a long stride forward, closing most of the distance between them.
If she stepped back now, he decided, he wasn’t going to let her off so easy for hugging him like that.
But Amelia didn’t move. She stood her ground.
Ryan pressed his tongue to the inside of his cheek, growing even more annoyed.
“I thought you wanted a divorce. So what was that all about just now?”
Amelia hesitated, then it clicked. Ryan must have thought she was protecting Clive.
There were things she could let slide, but not this.
Ryan shot Amelia a quick look, then turned and walked away.
Francisco watched as his boss stormed over, forcing a weary smile. “Mr. Packman, you—ow!”
Ryan, either by accident or on purpose, stepped right onto Francisco’s shiny shoe.
Francisco stared after him, totally lost.
He just got hugged, didn’t he? So why was he so angry now?
Shaking his head, he turned back to Amelia, pressing his hands together in a silent thank you before racing after Ryan.
Once they’d left, Amelia drove Belle’s car back to the office. She parked, grabbed the keys, and went straight to Belle’s office to return them.
But as soon as she walked in, she saw a handful of colleagues from the procurement team inside.
The moment she stepped through the door, everyone looked up at her—all at once.
