How do you even answer a question like that?
Nathan automatically glanced over to check Ryan’s face.
Honestly, Ryan had never gone out of his way to talk about Amelia. But if you spent any time around him—and weren’t totally clueless—you’d notice it. That wild, unpredictable, sometimes charming, sometimes downright scary guy, Mr. Ryan Packman, definitely had someone living in his heart.
Back when they were both overseas, living wild and not caring about consequences, Nathan had noticed something. No matter how crazy things got, Ryan stuck to one rule: he’d always make a trip back home, and he’d always find an excuse to swing by Alson Creek.
To see someone.
After moving back, Nathan finally heard the name Amelia and met her in person. That’s when it hit him—Ryan had been planning everything around her, step by step.
Everyone, including the scheming masterminds in the Packman family, kept guessing why Ryan’s first big move back home was to buy up West Medicine. They all thought he was setting up some kind of power play, a huge chess game.
Nathan thought that too. But now, he realized the truth. Ryan had set up the whole thing—spending a fortune, laying traps, playing the long game—and the only person he wanted to catch was Amelia.
His dedication to her was honestly kind of terrifying.
“Of course! You’re the new project specialist at West Medicine, aren’t you?” Nathan, watching Ryan’s reaction, just made something up. “And I’m a shareholder, too! I’ve got two percent—bought it with my own money, by the way!”
The more he talked, the more proud—and a little smug—he sounded.
There was a short pause on the other end. Out of pure social instinct, Amelia let out two awkward laughs. “Mr. Morris, you really are young and accomplished.”
Ryan, listening in, couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow. He could just imagine Amelia on the other end, desperately trying to come up with something nice to say.
A faint smile flickered in his eyes.
He jabbed Nathan with his pool cue.
Nathan got the message and switched gears. “So, Ms. Sadinton, what can I do for you?”
“Mr. Morris, is Pioneer Entertainment your company? I’ve got some big news for you—about the Salmeron family. I want to give it to you tomorrow night, if you’re brave enough to air it.”
The Salmeron family?
Ryan reached for his glass, the dark red wine swirling in the crystal. His eyes turned even colder, deep and unreadable.
After a moment, he looked up and gave Nathan a nod.
“Brave enough? Please,” Nathan said, puffing himself up, “there’s nothing in Alson Creek I wouldn’t air!”
Amelia got the answer she wanted and smiled. “Great. I’ll send you the time and place tomorrow.”
“Deal.”
Nathan waited for her to hang up, then scratched his head and looked at Ryan, who was sitting nearby.
“Ryan, Amelia’s about to leak some dirt on the Salmeron family… Aren’t she and Clive in the middle of a divorce? If she’s going public now, I’m guessing the negotiations fell through. Looks like this is about to get messy.”
Nathan leaned in, grinning. “Dude, this is your chance. Make your move while the timing’s perfect!”
Ryan shot him a look cold enough to freeze water.
“Still gorgeous. Absolutely irresistible!” She huffed. “Can you believe that spoiled brat Nathan hung up on me in two seconds?”
Amelia tried to comfort her. “Maybe he didn’t have your number saved. Probably thought you were a scam call.”
Diana pouted and muttered, “Figures. Both Morris brothers are so annoying.”
That jogged Amelia’s memory.
Nathan’s older brother was Aaron…
“Diana, is Aaron the only one you still owe money to?”
“Yep. Once I finish Mr. Schuck’s movie and get paid, plus I just renewed a bunch of brand deals for another five years and got all the fees up front… It all adds up—I’ll finally be debt-free!” Diana stretched and slumped in her seat, sighing in relief. “At last, I can start making money for myself!”
Amelia was honestly happy for her. Diana was tough. After falling from the top, she’d clawed her way back up, all on her own. She’d pushed through for years, and now she could finally live for herself.
Across the ocean, in a different time zone, the sun was just rising.
A classic medieval castle looked picture-perfect in the first morning light.
In a fancy dining hall, Aaron was having breakfast and listening to the news.
His phone buzzed. He glanced at it—a fresh deposit had just landed in one of his old private accounts.
Aaron sipped his coffee and idly scrolled up. There it was—a string of regular payments, going back ten years.
