Kristen’s worry was written all over her face. “Penny, sweetheart, what happened? Why are you not feeling well all of a sudden?”
Penny looked up at the screen, trying her best to smile. “Momma Kristen…”
Timmy stared, confused. Hadn’t they all agreed she’d just call her Kristen? Why was Penny suddenly calling her Momma again?
Clive brushed Penny’s hair back gently. This time, he didn’t say anything. If Penny wanted comfort, if she needed to call Kristen Momma when she was feeling sick, that was okay.
Kristen’s voice was soft. “Penny, honey, do you want me to come over and stay with you tonight?”
“No, it’s okay.” Penny shook her head right away. “I’m really tired, Momma Kristen. I just want to sleep. You should rest too.”
“Alright, but if you get scared or need anything, you can call me anytime. I’ll keep checking on you, and I’ll always be here for you, okay?”
Always here...
Penny bit her pale lip and whispered, “Okay.”
She closed her eyes and lay down, pulling the blanket up so high it nearly covered her face.
Clive smiled softly and tucked the covers in around her shoulders.
He glanced at Timmy. “Alright, Timmy, time for bed. Your sister’s going to be just fine.”
Timmy shot Penny one last worried look, then crawled back into his own bed.
Once both kids were settled, Clive slipped quietly out and closed the door behind him.
The video call was still open.
Kristen’s voice came through, still anxious. “Clive, if Penny’s not feeling better tomorrow, just let her stay home and rest. I can come over and keep her company.”
He thought of that angry phone call from Amelia earlier. The anger in his chest just kept getting hotter.
How could she threaten Penny like that and then act like she was the victim?
“I get it. You should get some sleep,” Clive said, ending the call.
He went downstairs to find Donna.
“Donna, before I got home, did Penny say anything to you?”
Donna thought for a second. “She had a nightmare, I think. She was talking in her sleep…”
Clive’s face was tense. “Did you hear what she said?”
“She kept saying things like, ‘Don’t leave me, help me…’ It sounded like she was dreaming about being chased by some monster or something,” Donna said quietly.
