Clive looked down at Kristen in his arms, his expression torn between shock and worry.
“Are you crazy?” he said, voice barely above a whisper.
Kristen just shook her head and tried to smile through the pain. “I don’t care about me, as long as you’re okay. Clive, it hurts so much…”
Her face twisted up as she let out a soft cry.
The man who’d thrown the acid realized he’d hit the wrong person. He panicked, spun around, and tried to bolt.
Amelia’s eyes narrowed—she recognized him instantly. Without thinking, she aimed and hurled her purse right at the back of his head. It hit with a solid thump and sent him stumbling.
Just then, security caught up and tackled the guy to the ground.
“Stay down, you idiot!” one of the guards barked.
Amelia strode over, ripped off the guy’s hat and mask, and confirmed her guess. It was Adlee—the guy she’d just fired.
She tossed his hat back in his face and told security, “Call the police.”
Adlee’s face was ghost-pale, but he still glared daggers at Amelia. “What’s your problem, Amelia? You think you’re so high and mighty? All you did was sleep your way to the top. Send me to jail, I’ll be out soon enough. And when I get out, I’m coming for you!”
The guard rolled his eyes and jabbed Adlee in the side with a taser. Adlee howled and finally shut up.
Amelia glanced over to see Clive already carrying Kristen to the car, then speeding off to the hospital.
Her eyes dropped to the bottle of acid on the ground. She hesitated, feeling something was off.
She stepped closer, but a security guard called out anxiously, “Ms. Sadinton, that’s concentrated sulfuric acid! Please don’t go near it!”
Concentrated acid? Something didn’t add up, but she couldn’t figure out what it was.
The police station was just a short drive away, so officers arrived quickly and hauled Adlee off. Amelia went with them to give her statement. The empty bottle was collected as evidence.
It was an open-and-shut case. The whole thing was caught on security cameras out front, and the guards’ statements matched up perfectly. Adlee even ranted the whole way to the station, basically confessing to everything.
But since Kristen was the one hurt, the police needed to get her side of the story too.
“The couple at the scene—Ms. Sadinton, do you know them?” a female officer asked gently, handing her a glass of water. She looked genuinely concerned, like Amelia might fall apart at any second.
“I do,” Amelia said calmly. “The man is my soon-to-be ex-husband, Clive. The woman is his assistant—and his mistress—Kristen.”
The officer choked on her water and coughed a few times before regaining her composure. She switched to a more professional tone. “Do you have their numbers? We can contact them if you’d rather not.”
Amelia pulled up Clive’s number from her blacklist and recited it for the officer.
But before the police had a chance to call, a commotion erupted in the lobby.
Amelia followed the officer out and saw Clive walk in, flanked by a group of sharp-dressed lawyers carrying briefcases.
Clive’s eyes flicked to her, lips pressed tight, like he wanted to say something.
But Amelia didn’t care. She didn’t want to hear it, didn’t want to see him.
She turned to the officer. “Is there a restroom I can use?”
The officer pointed down the hall. Amelia left without looking back. She didn’t actually need to use the bathroom—she just couldn’t stand to be around Clive any longer.
And something about tonight still felt wrong.
As she stood in the hallway, lost in thought, her phone started vibrating nonstop.
She looked down and saw Ryan’s name on the screen, which caught her off guard.
Why would he be calling her now?
Then it hit her—Ryan was the CEO of West Medicine. After such a big incident at the company, word must have reached him already.
She answered, “Mr. Packman?”
Ryan’s voice was tense, his breathing heavy. “Are you hurt?”
Amelia replied right away, “I’m fine, Mr. Packman, really. There’s nothing to worry about. I’ll be at work tomorrow like usual, and this won’t affect the project at all.”
